GPS can be jammed for under $100. That’s the reality shaping modern warfare.

Congrats to the Vermeer team for advancing navigation technology that still works when GPS fails. Their system helps drones and autonomous aircraft use cameras and terrain maps to understand where they are, instead of relying only on satellite signals. Even if GPS is blocked, the aircraft can still navigate and complete its mission.

Cruise missiles used visual navigation as far back as the 1950s. But today the technology is far more capable. In the war between Russia and Ukraine, drones are relying less on human pilots and more on AI that matches camera images to terrain maps. As Vermeer founder Brian Streem told the Wall Street Journal, faster computers, clearer maps, and sharper cameras changed the game. In his words, “everything has increased a thousandfold,” making visual navigation reliable in real missions.
The takeaway is simple: future autonomous systems must navigate without GPS.

This young man went to NYU film school. Brian was the first drone cinematographer working for guys like Spielberg. He videoed the fast and furious racing car series. Then he wins an Air Force development contract. Then he takes his cameras and NAV system using celestial stars like the early explorers to military. Now he’s got $10 million that we helped support from Draper and he’s off and running with most branches of military. He sells these cameras on the front lines of Ukraine. 🇺🇦
