This 1969 photo tells more than one story of Missouri’s years in Bremerton.
The Foley family visited the Mighty Mo on June 1, 1969, but their father’s connection to the ship began decades earlier.
He grew up near the New York Navy Yard in Brooklyn, where Missouri was built, and was just 14 years old when she was commissioned in 1944. With members of his own family serving during World War II, Missouri and the history she would become part of carried special significance.
Years later, after moving his family to Washington State, he crossed paths with Missouri again — this time bringing his children aboard.
“Although we were quite young at the time, we tried to understand the significance. We all remember that day we visited the Missouri,” shared Steven Foley.
The Mighty Mo has remained part of families’ stories across generations and throughout her many eras. Mahalo to the Foley family for sharing this special memory with us.
