🔥 Trash Pile on Fire At John Griffin Middle School In Fayetteville, NC

🏫 A large pile of trash and debris was spotted fire Friday morning, October 16, at John Griffin Middle School in Fayetteville, sending flames and thick black smoke into the air near the parking lot area

🔥 The fire involved a sizable pile of discarded materials burning in an outdoor paved area near the school grounds. Flames spread across the debris as smoke rose above the surrounding property.

⚠️ UPDATE: A trash truck was on campus and the back load caught on fire. The truck quickly emptied out the load on the pavement. This is happening much more often as lithium batteries are crushed inside the trash truck. These batteries short circuit and spark fires inside the back of a trash truck. Please properly discard lithium batteries and never toss in normal trash. You can throw them away at hazardous waste or e-waste recycling events often held in the county .

🚒 Students participated in a fire drill as the situation was contained. No word yet on what caused the fire or how the debris became ignited.

🚒 Fayetteville Fire Dept To Add 18 Firefighters And Two Ladder Companies With Federal Funding

👏 Good news for Fayetteville! Our Fire Department is getting some extra help as the city prepares to add 18 firefighters and two more ladder companies, thanks to more than $2.3 million in federal funding.

👨‍🚒 That means increasing the department’s staffing from 369 to 387 positions. Fayetteville currently operates 17 fire stations and five ladder companies, so adding two more would be a significant boost to its emergency response capabilities.

🏘️ As Fayetteville continues to grow, so does the need for fire protection. Officials have identified several areas that could benefit from additional coverage, including western Fayetteville, the Murchison Road corridor, Lake Rim, Ramsey and Langdon streets, and neighborhoods around Helen and Johnson streets.

🚒 Ladder trucks do much more than reach upper floors. They carry specialized equipment used for rescues, ventilation and other emergency operations, making them important resources for both residential and commercial emergencies.

📈 The department already handles more than 30,000 calls annually, and this expansion is another step toward keeping up with the city’s growing demands.

🏗️ Fayetteville has been gradually expanding its fire services over the years. The department’s last ladder company was added in 2005, while previous federal grants helped increase staffing to 330 in 2011 and 356 in 2020. Construction also began earlier this year on a permanent Fire Station 16 along Cedar Creek Road, with completion expected in spring 2027.

🗓️ The 18 additional firefighters and two ladder companies are expected to be operational in early 2027.

❤️ It’s encouraging to see more resources going toward the people who show up when our community needs them most. More firefighters and better coverage are investments that benefit everyone.

Stay safe.
