How do you plan a trip to Kazakhstan?🇰🇿

I went to Kazakhstan not knowing what to expect and it ended up being one of my favorite trips.

Turns out a lot of you were curious too.
Some of the DMs I got after posting about Kazakhstan:

"Wait, you went where?"
"Is it safe?"
"Do I need a visa?"
"Is it actually worth visiting?"

Fair questions. I asked myself every one of them before booking.

Before Almaty, everyone told me Yandex Go was the rideshare to use in Kazakhstan. I spent weeks trying to set it up. The verification code never came, before the trip or after I landed, and email signup failed too.

InDrive is what finally worked. Three things worth knowing if you go the same route:

1. Payment is Kazakh bank transfer only, not your regular card, so keep cash on you.
2. In rush hour you bid higher, or drivers will not pick you up.
3. The hotel-to-airport drive can jump from about 20 minutes to over two hours, so build a real buffer. In the center, the metro was more reliable than sitting in traffic.

There is an Irish castle you can actually book as a vacation stay. Not a quick museum tour where you get ushered out at closing. A real overnight.

What makes it feel special:

1. You sleep in the castle, not just walk through it.
2. Stone walls, grounds, and that quiet "how is this a rental" feeling.
3. It turns a normal Ireland itinerary into the story people keep asking about later.

Snowmass Balloon Festival is back September 25 through 27, 2026. Free, 51st year, 30-plus balloons.

If you only plan for the morning launches, you will miss Friday Night Glow. The balloons are tethered and lit against the Rockies, and it feels completely different from sunrise.

A few things to know before you go:

1. Location is Snowmass Town Park in Snowmass Village, Colorado.
2. Free parking at the Town Park Station Lot, or take RFTA and the village shuttle if you would rather not drive.
3. Morning launches run about 7:30 to 9:00 Saturday and Sunday. Dress in layers. Mountain mornings look warm in photos and feel much colder in person.
