Back in 1864, a scrappy little gold rush town in the Arizona Territory needed a name.
They skipped "Dusty Gulch." Passed on "Broke-Neck City."
Instead they named it after a fancy Eastern historian who never once set foot in Arizona.
And then… they couldn't even agree on how to say it right.
William Hickling Prescott — his Boston crowd said "PRESS-cot."
Arizona said… "PRESS-kit." Like biscuit.
And that's how it stayed.
You can always tell a tourist in Prescott (PRESS-kit) by how they say the name.
Now you know better, partner. 🤠

Most folks fly into Phoenix… and blast straight up I-17 to the Grand Canyon…

Big mistake, partner.

That’s like ridin’ through the Wild West with your eyes closed.

There’s a whole lotta Arizona you’re missin’.

You could be cruisin’ past Lake Pleasant… strollin’ Whiskey Row in Prescott… white-knucklin’ your way through Jerome… then rollin’ through the red rocks of Sedona.

And that’s before you even hit the canyon.

This ain’t just a drive…

It’s the journey.

Most folks think the Grand Canyon is the biggest geological show in Arizona…

But partner… there’s a line out there that helped create it.

Deep in Arizona runs a massive wall—droppin’ 2,000 feet into country so wild it don’t even bother askin’ your name.

It stretches nearly 200 miles… slicin’ the land clean in two.

When the Colorado Plateau lifted…

Rivers got shoved north…

Forced to carve deeper… and meaner…

Until they helped form the canyon we know today.

And that same wall?

Still blocks the desert heat… turnin’ dry land into the largest ponderosa pine forest on Earth.

This ain’t just scenery, partner…

It’s the line that shaped the West.

They call it…

The Mogollon Rim.

Most folks visit the Hermits Rest…

And think the fella behind the name was some lonely recluse hidin’ from the world.

But partner… that ain’t the full story.

Back in the 1890s, a prospector set up shop deep in the canyon near Dripping Springs…

Built himself a home… planted an orchard… and carved out a life most folks wouldn’t last a week in.

Sure, he lived alone…

But when travelers found him?

He welcomed ‘em in—shared fruit, swapped stories… and made himself a modest livin’ along the way.

Didn’t build tourism…

Tourism found him.

And that rugged trail folks still hike today?

He carved it himself.

Most who show up to the Grand Canyon in the middle of summer…

And head straight down into the oven.

Big mistake.

Because partner… the smartest hike this time of year stays right on the rim.

The Rim Trail gives you mile after mile of jaw-droppin’ views…

Without the knee-crushin’ climb back out.

You’ll pass through the Village…

But keep walkin’, and it gets quiet real fast.

And the best part?

The shuttle runs alongside you the whole way.

So when your legs start negotiatin’ surrender terms…

You’ve got an easy escape.

Most folks look at the Grand Canyon and think it’s somethin’ you hike…

Slowly.

Carefully.

Maybe over a few days.

But partner… some folks see it a little differently.

The Rim-to-Rim-to-Rim…

42 miles… over 10,000 feet of climb…

The kind of journey that breaks most people.

But in 2016, Jim Walmsley looked at that challenge…

And decided to run it.

Not in a day…

Not in half a day…

But in under 6 hours.

That ain’t just fast.

That’s downright unreasonable.

I’ll save you a mistake folks make when plannin’ a Rim-to-Rim hike in the Grand Canyon…

They focus on the hike…

And completely botch everything else.

Shuttles. Start points. Where to park. Where to stay the night before. How in blazes you’re gettin’ back to your car when it’s all said and done.

And partner… that canyon don’t forgive poor plannin’.

Especially now that both rims are back in play.

You get one shot at doin’ this right.

Blow the logistics?

You’ll spend more time stressin’ than enjoyin’ one of the greatest hikes on Earth.

Most folks look at the Grand Canyon and think it’s just a big ol’ scenic overlook…

But partner… this place is an upside-down mountain.

And it’s quietly huntin’ the unprepared.

Every year, it claims lives—and it ain’t who you’d expect.

Young, fit folks… pushin’ too far, too fast.

See, goin’ down feels easy.

Comin’ back up?

That’s where the canyon collects.

Then there’s the heat—cool on the rim, but down by the river?

You’re lookin’ at temperatures hot enough to break a man.

And the real twist?

It ain’t just dehydration…

It’s drinkin’ too much water without replacin’ salt.

The canyon don’t care how strong you are.

Respect it… plan ahead…

Or become part of the story.

If you’re headin’ into the Grand Canyon… you’re probably stuck between two legends:

Bright Angel Trail… or South Kaibab Trail.

Now South Kaibab?

All views, all the time.

Ridgelines, big drop-offs… the kind of scenery that’ll make you forget your own name.

But partner… she’s steep, exposed, and offers zero mercy.

No shade. No water.

Bright Angel?

A bit more forgiving.

Follows water, has rest houses, and gives you a fighting chance on the climb back out.

But here’s the thing most folks don’t realize…

Right now, you can’t connect the two.

So the choice you make?

Matters more than ever.

Most folks look at the Grand Canyon and think it’s somethin’ you admire from the rim…

But one man looked at it… and decided to walk the whole thing.

Alone.

Back in 1963, Colin Fletcher set out to do what no one had ever done before.

No backup if things went wrong… no second chances… and miles of terrain that didn’t care whether he made it out or not.

He covered an estimated 400 miles—zig-zaggin’ through side canyons, rationin’ water, and survivin’ on pure grit.

This wasn’t just a hike, partner…

It was a gamble with the canyon itself.

And somehow…

He won.
