Housing introduces new Residential Learning Communities at UM-Flint

The University of Michigan-Flint is launching two new residential learning communities this fall. The learning communities will focus on social justice and leadership. Both are collaborations between UM-Flint’s Housing and Residence Life, academic programs, and the Division of Student Affairs.

Rylie Dewley, local Grand Blanc High School Sophomore recently earned the chance to compete for the Miss Michigan Outstanding Teen by being crowned Miss Washtenaw County’s Outstanding Teen.
She will go on to compete in June for the title of Miss MI Outstanding Teen, a competition that features different phases such as a panel interview, fitness, talent, formal wear, and on-stage question.
Dewley is a competitive baton twirler with a noteworthy list of accomplishments and also the GBHS band Majorette. Rylie performed baton as her talent at the local level and will do so in June as well.
Each candidate must have a platform and hers is Start Heart Smart. After being born with a heart condition and believing it had healed but later finding out that she had other heart issues she wanted her platform to mean more than just something to do but rather something she lives with. Dewley uses the acronym H.E.A.R.T. (healthy, exercise, avoid, reduce, and think) to explain to children and teens how to be heart healthy. She states “It is imperative to teach and encourage healthy behaviors in children so they can create positive habits to keep their heart healthy for the rest of their life.”
Dewley is excited to go to the competition in June and compete for the title of Miss Michigan Outstanding Teen. Until then she plans to spend the rest of the year promoting her platform and helping kids & teens realize that they can make healthy choices.
The Miss America’s Outstanding Teen program promotes scholastic achievement, creative accomplishment, healthy living and community involvement for America’s teens and is one of the largest providers of scholarships to women in the world.
Some of Dewley’s other titles include *WTA Miss High School Twirler of the Year 1st runner up, NBTA State Show Twirl Champion, NBTA Michigan Advanced Junior Basic Strut Champion, Miss TU Regional Majorette, TU Regional Fancy Strut Champion, AAU Illinois Advanced Central Twirl Champion, AAU Illinois Advanced Central All-Around Champion, AAU Illinois Advanced Strut Champion, & AAU Illinois Advanced All-Around Strut Champion.
