Pat Oliphant, a Pulitzer Prize-winning political cartoonist, died Monday (7/13/26) morning at the age of 90 year's old.
“I think he was the best cartoonist of the last 100 years,” Edward Sorel, famed illustrator and friend of Oliphant’s.

Another friend of Oliphant’s, Hampton Sides, told how Pat famously “made presidents quake in their boots.”

“And at the same time, you weren’t anybody unless you were skewered by Oliphant,” he added. “He was just a brilliant satirist.”

I had the pleasure of representing a few of Mr. Oliphant's jobs with voice characterizations & political impressions. I had a gig with NBC's Sunday Today Show back in the late '80's where we'd animate static cartoons of national political cartoon satirists with a moving cartoon of sorts...very basic. They were all heavy hitters like Pat; Paul Szep, Tony Auth, Marlette, Gahan Wilson, Mike Peters, etc.

I featured this 1988 cartoon (w/WC Fields voice) because Pat actually speaks in it at the tail end. I thought it was me at first, putting it on in that tone. But nope, the director had sent me Pat's recording of the line afterward...Freaky.

Here's to a true artistic communicator and am immensely proud to have had the chance to work with him. Would like to have seen his take on the present political landscape.
