We live in Hyperbole-ville ever since Ask Jeeves retired. And Hyperbole-ville is a global village.

The marketing cliches mean nothing. And the excitement with which they assault my face has gone beyond annoying and walked right through the door to exasperating.

It’s not just on social media and TV. Any time you walk into a store it’s an assault on my health. My 7yo falls for it every time.

Ring pops, powdery donuts (powdery both on the outside and on the inside????). Magazines about other people’s marriages. A wide array of cheap sunglasses and plastic earrings for every holiday. Sparkles, glitter, holographic things and a scary amount of unicorns.

I’m running and hiding. I’m a vegan, order all of my groceries to be delivered and give my daughter stickers and activity books for all major holidays.

I’m kind of with the grinch on this one… all that noise, noise, noise, NOISE, NOISE!!!

I don’t even want to say “How do I stand out?” because those words don't stand out. It’s no longer revolutionary to be revolutionary. EVERYTHING is innovative and strategic and offers solutions.

Where is there left to go?????

So how do I ask you if you need my expertise without clogging up your email with things that peeve you?

If you ARE in need of marketing services, how do you want to be invited to chat? Do I have to play golf with you? Can I find out where you live and take a walk around your block? "Accidentally" bump into you at the grocery store?

Is there any one thing a person could say that would signal a person’s integrity and worthiness of your time?

There ARE trustworthy people you can work with to accomplish major things. How the heck do you find them?

Where is there space to get to know them while you enjoy their company? How can you continue the relationship to confirm that they are competent, reasonable, reliable and truthful?

All these things were going through my mind last year… so I decided to create that space for myself. I also do it for other non-pringle people. (If that sounds crazy, read my last post.)

I'm drowning in marketing solicitations.

I’m a marketing consultant. Why would they even be interested in me?

It’s overwhelming the sheer volume of people who want to coach me, advertise me, build my website, design my logo, take me to the next level, and even make my skin smoother.

If you are ready to invest in marketing, where do you start?

I’d call my trusted friends in the marketing industry and ask who they’ve had a good experience and impressive results with. Of course, I’m also the lady who saunters into a restaurant, asks the server what their favorite is, and orders that.

Marketers market… and some of them even do it well . Persuasion is king and BS is our knight in shining armour. But why are marketers wasting their time marketing their own business with the thousands of solicitations that give me nightmares? Are they really benefiting from it?

The answer, my friend, is NOT blowin’ in the wind. Here it is - Only 1% of marketing firms primarily get their business from PPC. Only 8% get their business primarily from the activities they are charging you for - social media, blogging, email marketing, etc.

Almost 60% primarily get their clients through personal networks and referrals. And another 10% from speaking and networking events. In other words, all the things everyone is paying them to do… mostly don’t work for them.

Hmmm… stick that in your pipe and smoke it.
I’m not down on marketing agencies at all. A fair amount of them do a great job for lots of businesses - especially ***consumer packaged goods and consumer services***. What if that’s not you?

Why would you market yourself like a snack stack of Pringles?!

Your 30 person team tackles projects that, if not done right the first time, could cost your client millions. You are not a stack of Pringles and you’re charging a buck 89 for your services.

What that translates to is… don’t spend your time and money on social media and paid ads, spend it on messaging and branding.
