REMEMBERING TEXAS HISTORY

On April 21, 1836, the Battle of San Jacinto became the decisive turning point of the Texas Revolution. In just 18 minutes, General Sam Houston’s roughly 900 Texian forces launched a surprise afternoon attack on Santa Anna’s larger Mexican army. The stunning victory crushed the Mexican forces, led to Santa Anna’s capture the next day, and secured Texas independence through the Treaties of Velasco. Few battles in history delivered such massive consequences in so little time, paving the way for the Republic of Texas and shaping the future of the American West.

William B. Travis (1809–1836) was just 26 when he bravely defended the Alamo garrison with fewer than 200 men against thousands of Mexican troops. Standing alongside fellow defenders, his courage and sacrifice became a symbol of determination that inspired the push for Texas independence and helped lay the foundation for the Republic of Texas.

On this day in Texas history: March 19-20, 1836 — The Battle of Coleto Creek unfolded during the Texas Revolution.

Texian Col. James Fannin and his men, retreating from Goliad, were surrounded by Mexican forces under Gen. José de Urrea on the open prairie. After fierce fighting and forming a defensive square, Fannin surrendered on March 20, expecting prisoner-of-war treatment.

Tragically, this surrender led to the Goliad Massacre on March 27, where most were executed.

"Remember Goliad!" became a fierce battle cry with "Remember the Alamo!" inspiring Texas victory at San Jacinto.

"We are not afraid to entrust the American people with unpleasant facts, foreign ideas, alien philosophies, and competitive values. For a nation that is afraid to let its people judge the truth and falsehood in an open market is a nation that is afraid of its people."

~ John F. Kennedy

Davy Crockett: The Legendary Hero of the Alamo

Davy Crockett, a legendary frontiersman, congressman, and folk hero, is remembered for his courage and sacrifice at the Battle of the Alamo. Born in 1786, Crockett's larger-than-life adventures made him a symbol of the American frontier spirit. In 1836, he joined the fight for Texas independence, defending the Alamo alongside other heroes like James Bowie and William B. Travis against thousands of Mexican troops. Despite being outnumbered, Crockett and these brave patriots held their ground for 13 days. On March 6, 1836, the Alamo fell, and Crockett was among those who gave their lives for Texas's freedom. His legacy continues to inspire the Lone Star State as Texans honor their independence this month.
