I feel like there will be some people who view this as a political post. Believe me, it isn't. Social programs have lost government funding sources and are now stretched just about as far as they can go. Some people are being denied services simply because the funds that were there in the past, aren't anymore. Historically, care for the sick, the poor, and the forgotten was an obligation of our churches, but no more. I believe that once schools, hospitals, and prisons became "for profit" entities, our programs began to suffer.

I started AFFABLE GIANT with the idea that after 30 years of helping people in hospitals, behavioral health clinics, nursing homes, and service organizations, I know a thing or two about how to serve my fellow citizens in need. I chose to start a company that will make money and then distribute its profits to the community, where it will do the most good. I call it "philanthropy, powered by capitalism." After many fits and starts, I am ready to start the next chapter of my life that honestly, will end only with my last breath. My focus is on the people that are best described as THE LAST (those who have been historically socio-economically disadvantaged), THE LEAST (those who might be discriminated against because of their age, gender, or intellectually or developmentally disabled), AND THE LOST (those who have been marginalized in society because of incarceration, drug and/or alcohol abuse or mental illness).

I have created a website and a small pop-up store as a beginning of my journey, but this is only the tip of the iceberg. There are HUGE plans in the works, but I am starting here, and now.
