When Jennifer Hunt, owner of JH Events, Flowers & Gifts - Fox Lake, was ready to expand her flower shop, she knew the town she was born and raised would be the perfect place.

Jennifer grew up in Fox Lake and has over 40 years of experience in flower design. When the opportunity arose to take over an existing flower shop in the community, Jennifer took the chance to carry on the family legacy and continue sharing her passion with the community. Jennifer’s daughter, Deanna Hunt, shares her mother’s passion and is the driving force of the shop in Fox Lake.

Sometimes running a small business means getting creative in more ways than one. 🎨

Sheri & Amber Leese, owner of Blazin Ceramics studio in Fox Lake, have creativity running through the family. While Sheri brings the business background and entrepreneurial spirit, her daughter, Amber, is the creative mind and artist who brought it to life.

This passion project began at home with Amber and her kiln after she fell in love with the art program at Grant Community High School in Fox Lake. With no accessible ceramics and pottery studio in Fox Lake, Sheri and Amber saw a gap to fill and share their love of art with the community.

Blazin’ Ceramics opened in 2019 before the pandemic. “We wanted to make art accessible to Fox Lake,” said Sheri Leese. “We wanted to create a safe place for the people to come in, connect with others, and use their hands to make something special to take home.

When the pandemic hit, Sheri and Amber had to get even more creative to continue offering art to the community. Because people weren’t able to be in studio, they created a “Take & Paint” kit, equipped with a pottery figurine and paint, to give people access to art while spending more time at home.

That willingness to adapt, try something new, and share their love of creativity is part of what makes Fox Lake’s small business community so special. Today, Blazin Ceramics gives people a place to slow down, get creative, and make something of their own right here in Fox Lake.

“Art can be like therapy,” said Sheri. “I want people to leave the studio having learned something new with a piece of their own art to be proud of.”
