Gillespie Livestock’s Statement on New World Screwworm and educational material :
Statement: We are here to take care of our consignors and buyers like every other week. We work for you and will not operate under fear as such state has no value, we have conquered this enemy before. Feeding the masses has always been on the back of the American rancher and farmer. A view from our 75 year old catwalk will show a resilient industry which has withstood droughts, trade wars, epidemics, activists, and last but not least our own government. We wake up to a dawn of a war we have fought before, arguably lessons should have been learned, now with history on our side we are in a battle we know how to win. We are ready to pull up our sleeves and go to work. Unless in an infected zone business as usual…..monitor your livestock …..to all consumers this is not a food safety issue …. Eat more beef, lamb and goat !
Now Let’s go to work :
What we know as of 6.7.26. It is important to use the links below to keep updated on quarantine areas and travel documents. Updates could be daily, thus showing the importance of going directly to the governing source.
Texas Animal Health Commission (TAHC)
www.tahc.texas.gov
Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS)
www.screwworm.gov
If concerned you have a case call your local vet, or TAHC vet line 1-800-550-8242.
1. 🙌🏻Continue to Monitor your stock
2. 🙌🏻Continue to use fly protocols on stock and always consult your vet and follow labels. Pro-Active treatments for cattle for consideration are Dectomax and Ivomec. For sheep and goats please see a good chart by Texas Sheep and Goat Raisers below.
3. 🙌🏻2 confirmed cases of New World Screwworm (NWS) in Zavala county
4. 🙌🏻Quarantine zones are a 12 mile radius of infected animal.
5. 🙌🏻You can travel through a quarantine area with stock as long as you do not stop for over 24 hours.
6. 🙌🏻Quarantined areas as of now are not releasing stock. (Only one currently)TAHC tells us that in the future there will be shorter times of release with treatment and vet inspection in quarantined areas.
Animals from a quarantine zone will be able to move with a vet inspection and protocol in the future.
7. 🙌🏻Gillespie Livestock Company is here to serve you, the producers, and answer questions you may have. We have developed an in house task force dealing with concerns. Please ask for Shaun Geistweidt, Wyatt Geistweidt, Kade Burrow, or Mandy Geistweidt @ 830-997-4394.
