In Predictably Irrational (a fascinating read for those interested in neuromarketing and neuroeconomics), author Dan Ariely describes a Price Decoy Experiment using magazine subscription offers.

Like most of Ariely’s experiments, this one is deceptively simple.

Two groups of subjects saw one or the other of these offers to subscribe to The Economist.

Offer A: $59 – Internet Only Subscription (68 chose) $125 – Internet and Print Subscription (32 chose)

Predicted Revenue – $8,012

Offer B: $59 – Internet Only Subscription (16 chose) $125 – Print Only Subscription (0 chose) $125 – Internet and Print Subscription (84 chose)

Predicted Revenue – $11,444

Take a moment to look at this rather startling result.

Both offers are the same, with the exception of including the “print only” subscription in
Offer A.

Despite the fact that not a single person chose that unattractive offer, its impact was dramatic – 62% more subjects chose the combined print and Internet offer, and predicted revenue jumped 43%.

The print-only offer was the decoy, and served to make the combined offer look like a better value.

Okay, so if you recall, we don't just have 1 Brain, we have 3 Brains.

🧠𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗟𝗶𝗺𝗯𝗶𝗰 𝗦𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺
🐊𝗥𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗕𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗡𝗲𝗼𝗰𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗲𝘅

One layer of the brain is called the New Brain also called Neocortex (the most external part of the brain), which is associated with higher thinking, preprocessing data, and deduction. The findings that this layer attains are then shared with the other layers of the brain.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗟𝗶𝗺𝗯𝗶𝗰 𝗦𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺

The Middle Brain also called Limbic System is associated with feelings and processes emotions that you or I might be experiencing at any given time. One might say that it is the bedrock of what some call gut feelings. Of course, anything that this part of the brain feels is communicated with the other two brains.

𝗥𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗕𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻 🐊

The third brain is called the Reptilian Brain, which is where all decisions are ultimately made. This part of the brain sucks in all the information that the other two brains have gathered and uses the information to formulate the best decision.

Through Neruoscience technology like fMRI, EEG, Galvanic Skin Response, Heart Rate Variability, Facial Regcognition Software, and Eye Tracking, we have determined that in order to have effective marketing, your messages need to access the 𝗥𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗕𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻.
