This is important news for Fruita! Another opportunity to share and promote the rich history of our area.
Announcing A New Chapter Ahead for Museums of Western Colorado:
The Museums of Western Colorado Board of Directors has approved a long-term revitalization plan to create a combined, multi-disciplinary natural history museum campus at the current Dinosaur Journey site in Fruita.
This was not an easy decision, but after extensive evaluation, the Board believes this direction best positions the Museums to fulfill our mission, strengthen our impact on the Western Colorado community, and ensure long-term sustainability. We are confident that this path will ensure our ability to invest in exceptional exhibits, educational programs, and best practices in collections stewardship.
As we move forward, the collections, stories, and educational experiences of Museum of the West and Cross Orchards Historic Site will be thoughtfully integrated with Dinosaur Journey, creating one destination where visitors can explore the extraordinary scientific and cultural heritage of the Colorado Plateau.
As part of this phased transition, public operations at Cross Orchards Historic Site will conclude beginning in 2027. While the site will no longer operate as a museum campus, its collections and stories will continue to be preserved and shared as an important part of the Museums’ future.
This is just the beginning, and we’re committed to keeping our community informed every step of the way.
