A $125 million marketing campaign is enormous, but it’s still below the biggest marketing spends in Hollywood history. Some examples include:
* Avatar (2009): estimated $150–200 million+ marketing.
* Avengers: Endgame (2019): estimated around $200 million marketing.
* Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015): estimated $200 million+ marketing.
* Jurassic World (2015): widely reported around $150 million marketing.
* Barbie (2023): while Warner Bros.’ direct spend was likely around $150 million, the film benefited from hundreds of millions more in promotional partnerships, making its overall marketing presence one of the largest ever.
The only thing bigger than the Trojan Horse? This film's budget.
As Christopher Nolan's highly anticipated adaptation of 'The Odyssey' lands in theaters tonight, the A-list director's follow-up to 2023's 'Oppenheimer' is one of the most expensive R-rated films to ever hit the silver screen.
According to Variety, Matt Damon's latest attempt to make it home carries a budget of roughly $250 million, while marketing for the movie is estimated around $125 million. The whopping $375 million total puts Nolan's break even point somewhere between $625 million to $750 million, according to Forbes' estimates.
Early indications project the movie to gross around $100 million over its opening weekend, with some estimates as high as $120 million. That box office figure would mark Christopher Nolan's biggest opening since 2012's 'The Dark Knight Rises,' which brought home $160 million over its debut weekend.
