Most Korean beauty brands are losing money on TikTok Shop for one reason: they treat it like an ad channel.
I'm Scott Kim, and I've spent 12 years in LA helping Korean, Japanese and Chinese brands enter the US market. Here is what the data from 2026 actually shows.
The US K-beauty market hit $2.0B in 2025, up 37% year over year. On TikTok Shop specifically, K-beauty sales grew 132%, and US TikTok Shop GMV is heading past $27B in 2026. The opportunity is not subtle.
But TikTok Shop does not reward the playbook Korean HQ teams know. It is not a CPM/CPC ad platform. It is a marketplace built on the creator economy and search discovery. Import the Korean digital-ad mindset and you fail roughly 95% of the time.
Look at the brands that broke through publicly, and the same four patterns show up. They concentrate on one hero SKU instead of launching 40 at once. They pair clinical claims with an affordable price, $15 to $35, about half of Sephora and Ulta luxury. They build a real creator affiliate network at a 15-30% commission that US creators will actually accept. And they run lives on a trend-hashtag cycle, where prepared brands see 4-7x the sales of unprepared ones. Publicly reported examples like Medicube and COSRX scaled on exactly these mechanics.
If you run global marketing for a beauty brand and TikTok Shop is on your 2026 plan, the gap between these formulas and the Korean ad playbook is exactly where budgets get burned.
