Really looking forward to my 4th year documenting the Bernard Lown Award for Social Responsibility on May 21st. This year the Lown Institute is also holding an all-day conference dedicated to the issues surrounding affordable healthcare. This year's winner, the speaker lineup and workshop topics instill hope in my heart. I encourage you to check it out, and if you are interested in making impactful change within our healthcare system, join the conversation. https://lowninstitute.org/projects/bernard-lown-award-for-social-responsibility/

Keeping the excitement (and the workflow!) going on Picture Day at the office.

I remember picture day at school. It was basically a lost day—lining up, waiting, laughing with friends, and making endless trips to the mirror.

More Than a Headshot: Creating Consistent, Engaging Visual Stories for Growing Companies

When companies think about their marketing photography, they often think in pieces:
Headshots. Product shots. Marketing images.
But the real value comes when all of those visuals work together to be consistent in tone, intentional in style, and aligned with the company’s personality – the heart of good branding.
That’s where experience matters.

Recently, I had the opportunity to work with SeqWell, a fast-growing biotech company and one of my long-time clients, on both company portraits and a new product launch. It was a great reminder that not every commercial photographer is equipped to handle work at a company-wide scale, especially when the goal is cohesion, not just good individual images.

Photographing a Company, Not Just People
Creating portraits for an entire organization isn’t the same as photographing one executive or a small team. You’re balancing:
• Different personalities and comfort levels
• A consistent visual tone across departments
• Brand alignment that feels human, not stiff
The goal isn’t identical photos—it’s belonging. Each portrait should feel like a real person, while still clearly part of the same story.
That kind of consistency takes planning, communication, and an understanding of how images will actually be used across a company’s website, recruiting materials, and marketing channels.

From People to Products (and Back Again)
Alongside the portraits, I also photographed SeqWell’s latest product launch. (In the market for some cutting-edge genome sequencing?) Product photography like this brings a different challenge because it represents the tangible result of the company’s expertise and effort. The images need to feel polished and credible but still connected to the brand’s larger visual language.

Over the years I’ve developed a comprehensive knowledge of how SeqWell wants to present themselves, so the product images I created naturally fit into the same visual ecosystem as the portraits. The visual continuity echoes and supports SeqWell’s brand.

Creativity Builds Culture Too
However, one of my favorite moments from the shoot didn’t end up on a website at all.
On a whim, and a suggestion from my assistant, I photographed the product boxes and vials being held by the plastic Godzilla in our studio. It was playful, unexpected, and completely optional—but it landed. The team shared it internally, it boosted morale, and it reminded everyone that serious work doesn’t have to mean taking ourselves too seriously.
That kind of creative flexibility comes from trust—and from understanding when it’s appropriate to push just a little beyond the brief.

The Bigger Picture
Commercial photography isn’t just about making things look good. It’s about helping companies show who they are—clearly, consistently, and confidently.
When a photographer can move seamlessly between executive portraits, full-team consistency, product launches, and the occasional morale-boosting Godzilla cameo, the result is more than images. It’s a visual partnership.
If your company is growing, launching something new, or simply ready for visuals that feel intentional and human, I’m always happy to talk about what that could look like—and how photography can support not just your brand, but your people too.

Back-to-School Energy for Grown-Ups (and Your Marketing)

Remember?
- The thrill of new notebooks ( I still get excited over these!)
- The smell of freshly sharpened pencils
- The total satisfaction of a new Trapper Keeper, that Gen X symbol of honor roll ambition?

The “back-to-school” buzz doesn’t really leave us—it just graduates into adulthood. At my office and studio, our school supplies look more like fresh branding photos, upgraded LinkedIn profiles, and - I think it may be time - a better coffee maker for the office.

Late August has a way of nudging us into that reset mindset. Vacations wind down, out-of-office replies vanish, and suddenly we’re all in the grown-up version of homeroom: catching up on emails and plotting how to make the most of the rest of the year. For business owners and professionals, it’s prime time to sharpen your marketing pencils. A new headshot or updated set of brand images can be the adult equivalent of showing up with the coolest sneakers on the first day—you feel ready, confident, and just a little ahead of the game.

Think of it as your second New Year, but with better snacks. Clients and colleagues are paying attention, setting goals, and planning big moves before the calendar flips. If you meet them with visuals that look polished and intentional, you’ll ride that wave of back-to-school energy straight into fall momentum.
Still, balance is key. Before the bells ring and it’s full steam ahead, don’t skip the last sweet bits of summer. Sneak in that beach day, linger at sunset, grab one more ice cream cone. And maybe, just maybe, when you back to school shop with your kids, get yourself a new notebook.

See you in September!

It’s a Mind Game: Why Posing with Purpose Builds Trust (and Business)

Stepping in front of a camera for your professional portrait can feel like a spotlight moment. Even with the right suit, polished look, and careful preparation, most people still worry: Do I look natural? Is this flattering? Those thoughts might feel like they are helping, but they are often what keeps you from taking your best portrait.

Here’s the secret fix: what you’re thinking about matters just as much as how you’re standing.

Instead of focusing on your appearance (you can leave the tie-straightening to me!), reflect on your accomplishments and your goals. When you think about leading a team through a tough challenge, closing a deal, or the vision you’re building toward—your posture shifts, your expression becomes more authentic, and your eyes reflect confidence. That’s the difference between a picture that looks posed and one that communicates leadership.

The Energy You Project
Portraits aren’t just images. They are signals. People instantly read subtle cues in your body language and expression, whether they realize it or not. When your mindset is anchored in pride, clarity, and progress, your photo conveys credibility, approachability, and trust. And trust, of course, is the currency of business.

Your Portrait as a Business Asset
Professional images are not vanity projects. They are tools. They appear on your website, LinkedIn, proposals, media coverage, and beyond. A photo that radiates confidence helps shape perception before a conversation even begins. Done well, it’s the first step toward building stronger connections and opening more doors.

So next time you’re in front of the camera, don’t think about your smile lines. Think about the business you’ve built, the impact you’ve made, and where you’re headed next. That mindset will do more for your image—and your business—than any camera setting ever could.

Branding Photoshoot vs. Best Friend With a Camera:
A Love Story With a Plot Twist

Let’s set the scene.

You’ve launched a business—or you’re finally taking your side hustle seriously—and you need photos. The real kind. The ones that make people stop scrolling and say, “Oh wow, they look legit.” You’re dreaming of polished headshots, on-brand images for your website, a killer social media presence. This is it. It’s time.

And then… your best friend says those five infamous words:

“I’ve got a nice camera.”

Cue swelling music. A moment of hope. Maybe even relief. Because hey—free photos, right? What could go wrong?

Well, let me walk you through it.

1. The Setup
Best Friend: You meet at the park. Or in your kitchen. Maybe you haul a few outfits into the back alley behind your favorite coffee shop because “the light’s really good there.”
Professional Branding Photographer (hi, that’s me): We meet for a strategy session. We talk about your brand colors, your business goals, your vibe. I ask weird-but-useful questions like “What do you want people to feel when they land on your website?” Then I build a shot list that supports all of it. Yes, even that quirky-about-me page.

2. The Gear
Best Friend: Has a camera with a very impressive lens. It may or may not be on Auto. Batteries die halfway through.
Professional: Brings multiple lenses, backup cameras, lighting, reflectors, and the know-how to use them all without Googling "how to make photos look less orange."

3. The Direction
Best Friend: Offers guidance like, “Um, maybe smile less? No, more. Actually, can you not do that thing with your hands?”
Professional: Knows how to pose you so you look natural, confident, and not like you just spotted a wasp. I direct you gently but clearly, and I understand how to photograph every body type and energy level with grace. Bonus: I can get real smiles, not the “I’m deeply uncomfortable but trying to be cool” kind.

4. The Final Product
Best Friend: Sends you 278 unedited JPEGs via Dropbox. One is accidentally of their feet.
Professional: Delivers a curated gallery of fully edited, on-brand, high-resolution images ready for your website, social media, press kit, LinkedIn, or wherever your business needs to shine.

5. The Intangibles
Best Friend: Loves you dearly but might ghost you when you ask for a reshoot.
Professional: Respects your time and investment. I’m here to partner with you, elevate your brand, and make sure you walk away feeling amazing—not like you owe someone brunch for the rest of your life.

The Plot Twist?
Your best friend isn’t the villain here. They’re wonderful. They bring you soup when you’re sick and know how to make you laugh-cry. But for something as important as your brand, the visual heartbeat of your business, you want someone with experience, vision, and a plan.

Hiring a branding photographer is an investment, not just in photos, but in your professional identity. It’s how you show the world what you do, why you do it, and why it matters.

And yes, we’ll still have fun. I promise. There might even be snacks.

Thinking about taking your brand to the next level? Let’s chat. Whether you’re a creative, a coach, a consultant, or building something entirely new, I’ll help you look like the pro you are—and feel like the rockstar you forgot you were.

Because your business deserves more than “Hey, can you just stand by that bush real quick?”

A few weeks ago I published a post about the way a great set of cohesive business portraits can boost morale and improve company culture. I guess I forgot to mention the importance of popcorn. 😆
Seriously though, it is always worth it to bring a professional in when you are updating company imagery. It does make a difference. Your team is worth it.
