Julie Quick has been drawing and painting since her teens, but began prioritizing her art in 2015 by challenging herself to paint every day for a hundred days. Some pieces were easy, and painting came seamlessly to her. Other days, she struggled to post her creations, but she learned that those difficult days taught her how to make the next work of art better. Creative obstacles are overcome with time spent at the easel, patience, and being willing to try new directions. Quick soon realized that problem-solving required time at the easel, and that she could learn through experiment and repeated effort. Failure prepared her for the next day’s painting and helped her improve her process.
With a foundation in design, John Andrew Dixon brings both aesthetic complexity and artisanship to his painterly works. With scissors, blades, pliers, probes, sandpaper, and paste, he saturates and manipulates his ingredients. His use of printed text suggests texture and shadows, creates visual density, and achieves depth. His decades of design decisions and influences allow him to work intuitively on site. Collage, as a medium, addresses the creative tension between order and chaos, just as improvisational musicians elaborate on a melody.
