Happy National Moonshine Day!

is an unaged, high-proof corn whiskey traditionally distilled at night to avoid government taxation.

Today, it has evolved into a popular, commercially available craft spirit, famous for its cultural significance and rich history.

The term “moonshine” dates back to late 15th-century Britain, but its American roots stem from 18th-century Appalachian settlers who brewed their corn whiskey covertly under the cover of the night sky.

Those triple-X marks seen in pop-culture moonshine jugs aren’t just for show. Historically, they indicated that the batch had been run through the still three times, meaning it was highly pure and potent (often over 80% ABV).

Moonshine is famously sold in glass mason jars because of deep-rooted Southern culture. The resealable, durable jars were perfect for the illicit trade and made passing the batch around to friends much easier.

It’s National Fish and Chips Day!

is far more than a simple meal.

This iconic dish is a beloved British staple packed with a surprisingly fascinating history, a starring role in wartime morale, and a global legacy.

The dish actually combines two separate immigrant cultures! Fried fish was brought to England by Jewish immigrants, while thick-cut chips originated in Belgium.

For decades, the hot meal was wrapped directly in old newspapers because it was a cheap, disposable way to serve the working class. It was only banned much later due to health and hygiene concerns.

The dish gets a bad rep as “junk food,” but it is actually a highly nutritious meal. A standard portion provides nearly half of the recommended daily vitamin intake for women and one-third for men.

National Ketchup Day

is a surprisingly fascinating condiment with roots tracing back to ancient China.

It evolved from a fermented fish sauce called kôe-chiap before completely transforming into the sweet, tomato-based sauce we know and love today.

The earliest recorded ketchup ancestor (around 300 B.C.) was a fermented paste made from fish entrails, meat byproducts, and soybeans. The word is believed to be derived from the Amoy region of China’s dialect word “ke-tchup” or “kôe-chiap”.

European traders traveling through Southeast Asia in the 17th century brought this umami-packed brine back home.

Before Americans adopted the tomato in the 1800s, British and early American ketchup recipes were actually made from mushrooms, walnuts, oysters or anchovies.

In the 1830s, an Ohio physician named Dr. John Cook Bennett declared that tomatoes were a cure-all. He even condensed ketchup into tomato pills to treat ailments like indigestion, jaundice and diarrhea.

The United States Department of Agriculture has incredibly specific rules for what qualifies as “fancy” ketchup. To make the cut, it must flow no more than 14 centimeters in 30 seconds at 20 degrees Celsius.

Because of the natural acids in tomatoes and vinegar, ketchup works as a fantastic natural polish for tarnished brass and copper.

National Gingerbread Day

has a rich, fascinating history spanning thousands of years.

Originally consumed for medicinal purposes and ancient ceremonies, this spiced treat evolved into a worldwide holiday favorite—even serving as a display for the news in 16th-century storefront windows!

The first known recipe for gingerbread dates back to ancient Greece around 2400 B.C. The treat was later introduced to Europe by an Armenian monk in 992 A.D.

Because ginger naturally aids digestion, it was originally eaten as medicine. A doctor even prescribed gingerbread to King Hans of Sweden to cure his depression!

National Veggie Burger Day

have evolved from obscure hippie health food to global menu staples.

Invented in 1982 by London restaurateur Gregory Sams, the original “VegeBurger” was made from sesame seeds, oats and wheat protein.

While Sams popularized the term “vegeburger,” a 1948 American radio show featured a character talking about a patty made from beans and nuts.

National Donut Day

are one of the most popular foods of all time: sweet, delicious & can be eaten on the go.

Americans eat over 10 billion doughnuts every year, averaging roughly 31 per person.

Though originally just fried dough balls known as “olykoeks” (or oily cakes), the classic ring shape was invented so the center would cook evenly without leaving the middle raw.

The doughnut hole was reportedly invented by a ship captain named Hanson Gregory, who grew tired of raw-centered pastries and poked a hole through the dough using his ship’s steering wheel.

National Cheese Day

People have been making for over 7,200 years, and it is so beloved that global production actually exceeds the combined worldwide output of coffee, to***co, tea and cocoa beans.

Ancient civilizations accidentally created cheese by storing milk in the stomach linings of animals. The naturally occurring rennet enzymes in the stomach caused the milk to curdle into solid curds and liquid whey.

Mozzarella cheese is the biggest-selling cheese variety in the U.S., followed by Cheddar.

Happy National Cognac Day!

is a strictly regulated French brandy crafted exclusively in the Charente region using specific white grapes.

Cognac starts as a low-alcohol, high-acid white wine made primarily from Ugni Blanc grapes.

The wine must be distilled twice in traditional copper pot stills to create a highly concentrated, clear spirit called eau-de-vie (water of life in French).

By law, Cognac must be aged for at least two years in wooden casks made exclusively from oak grown in the Limousin or Tronçais forests.

The French actually drink very little of it. Over 98% of all Cognac produced is exported, with the United States acting as the largest global consumer.

Because wood is porous, about 3% of the aging Cognac evaporates from the barrel each year. The industry poetically refers to this lost volume as the “Angels’ Share.”

World Cider Day!

is an ancient, naturally gluten-free beverage that was historically cleaner and safer to drink than water. It takes about 36 apples to produce a single gallon of fresh, unfermented cider.

The best apples for making cider are known as “spitters”. Taking a raw bite is highly unpleasant due to their intense acidity and tannins, but these apples create an incredibly complex and sophisticated cider.

Cider holds such massive agricultural importance in the UK that it was historically used as a form of payment for farm laborers.

Only Americans feel the need to use the word “hard” to denote that cider contains alcohol. Everywhere else in the world, alcoholic cider is simply called cider.

Just like fine wine, the climate, rainfall, and soil heavily impact the characteristics of the apples. The exact same apple variety will produce a totally different cider depending on where it is grown.

Cider was a common beverage in colonial America and was even used as currency in some areas.

Cider contains vitamins and minerals from the apples, and some believe it can have various health benefits

National Chocolate Macaroon Day

are a delicious twist on the classic coconut or almond cookie. They offer a delightful contrast of textures—crispy on the outside, and chewy and rich on the inside. Whether you are baking them from scratch or buying them at a bakery.

The word macaroon traces back to the Italian word maccarone (meaning paste). This root word also gave us macaroni!

Macaroons originated in Italian monasteries during the 8th or 9th century. They were originally made with ground almonds, sugar, and egg whites (similar to marzipan or amaretti).

Early macaroons were made with almond flour. However, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when Jewish immigrants settled in America, shredded coconut became much more accessible and affordable than almonds. It quickly became the dominant ingredient for the cookie in the US.
