I've been watching something happen and I can't not say something about it.
Google has been rolling out updates. Rankings are shifting. Businesses that were sitting comfortably on page one are slipping, and a lot of them don't know it yet because they're not checking. They're prepping for their busy season. Focused on staffing and inventory and getting ready for the customers they're expecting to walk through the door.
But here's the thing. That traffic didn't pause while they were busy. It already went somewhere else.
To the competitor down the street who updated their site six months ago. Who maybe isn't even better than them. Who just looks like it online. That's who's getting the clicks right now. That's who's getting the new customers who were never going to call to find out which one was actually worth trying. They just picked whoever showed up first and looked like they had it together.
And the businesses losing that traffic have no idea it's happening. Their regulars are still coming back so everything feels fine. But the strangers, the ones who just moved to the area, the ones looking for their new spot, the ones who would have driven past three other options to get to them if they'd only found them first, those people already made their decision. On a website. In about ten seconds.
Every season this doesn't get fixed is another season of strangers who almost became regulars.
I know most people will read this and still wait. The timing never feels right and the busy season has a way of making that feel justified. But if this hit differently, if the list has been long enough that something in here landed, you already know what to do.
