Work that matters looks like this.

We are deeply committed to every project we support. But there are some projects that we'll admit hit a little different. That remind you that this world needs all of us, working together, to heal.

We have the privilege of supporting the Virginia Opioid Abatement Authority and now also the newly launched Virginia Opioid Abatement Foundation (VOAF) — a new 501(c)(3) dedicated to fighting the substance use crisis in our state through education, research, advocacy, and real community collaboration.

Virginia families are hurting. Virginia communities are also fighting back — with compassion, with science, and with each other. VOAF exists to fuel that fight.

They're already building momentum. This June 15–17, VOAF will host the inaugural Virginia Recovery Conference at the historic Hotel Roanoke in Roanoke — bringing together clinicians, community leaders, advocates, researchers, and families to share what's actually working in prevention, treatment, harm reduction, and long-term recovery.

Our job is to help get the word out - press outreach, targeted communications through email, landing page, social promos.

We're so passionate about this work we're committed to using every channel possible. Including our own.

So if you see this and are interested, or know someone else who is, spread the word that registration is open — link in comments.

Virginia is ready to heal. Join us in recruiting as many people as possible to help play a role in that.

A logo is never just a logo.

It's the moment a place finds its voice. A single image that says: this is who we are, this is what we're proud of and this is the story we're inviting you into.

This season we were honored to share the reveal of the new Explore Essex visual identity — and to have led Essex County, Virginia in finding that symbol.

Essex County's story is rooted in the Chesapeake Bay. It lives on the water, around the table and through generations of history that continue to shape the community today. The new Explore Essex mark reflects all of that — the character, the landscape, the people and the kind of place that still feels real in a world that's moving too fast.

This identity gives visitors a way to recognize it, residents a reason to rally around it and the whole community one clear voice to tell its story.

That's what good branding does. And that's exactly the kind of work we love to be part of.

Welcome to Explore Essex. Slow down. Connect. Come see what's waiting on the water.

The most important part of any delegation isn't the travel. It's what happens after.

It's what the people in the room(s) do with what they learned. The relationships they deepen. The shared purpose they carry home. The decisions — about industry, about workforce, about security — that get made differently because of what was said in a steel factory in Sheffield or a hallway at Parliament.

That's why storytelling isn't a nice-to-have after engagements like this. It's part of the work itself. Because if the ideas that surface in these rooms never travel beyond them, the full return on that investment never materializes.

Last month, our own Steph Heinatz had the privilege of traveling to the United Kingdom with the Hampton Roads Alliance's Defense Tech Delegation to do just that — collect the stories, share the stories, support the Alliance in growing the impact.

The Delegations included more than 40 regional leaders — elected officials, college presidents, workforce leaders, defense industry executives — all focused on one question: how do regions (like Hampton Roads in Virginia and South Yorkshire in the UK) build the industrial base that national security demands?

Stories from this Delegation will be rolling out over the coming months. But before any of that begins, here are a few of the words that Steph carried home with her as inspiration for why all this work matters.

"We're entering a period where security — economic security, digital security, energy security, national security — has become the defining issue of our age. But the nature of security has changed. The future of defense is no longer just nation to nation. Increasingly it's community to community." — Mayor Oliver Coppard, South Yorkshire

"If people feel secure — secure in their jobs, secure in their homes, and feel that they live in safe, strong communities, and that they and their families have opportunities in the future — the seeds of division that are being sown by some do not land on fertile ground. Creating opportunity through regional growth is a hugely important part of creating the kind of society that we want to live in and be proud of for the future." — Nick Forbes, The Lord Forbes of Newcastle CBE

"National security is not only shaped in capitals. It is built in shipyards, laboratories, factories, and training centers, in places like South Yorkshire and Hampton Roads." — Douglas L. Smith, President & CEO, Hampton Roads Alliance

Two regions. One shared mandate. And a lot of story left to tell.

Springtime in Virginia wine country.

At Ashton Creek Vineyard and Riverside Vines, the vineyard team is hard at work preparing for the growing season, but they're not doing it alone. Their flock of sheep plays an important role this time of year, naturally managing the vineyard floor as the vines begin to wake up.

It’s a rhythm as old as farming itself; people, place, and purpose working in sync to set the stage for another vintage.

The best part of crabbing season (aside from the eating of them, of course) is the opportunity to pull crabbing photos from our archives and celebrate the working watermen who have allowed us to photograph them in action year after year. It's a dream come true to put images just like these to work for Virginia Seafood!

These guys are usually on the OTHER side of the cameras. So when they agreed to sit in and test lighting, audio, placement of interview chairs, there was no doubt we needed a snap. Here's to Austin and Rob and all the videographers and photographers committed to SHOWING the stories that are so important to share.

Working oyster beds along the York River requires ingenuity and independence, with boats often customized for the harvest.

In Working Waterfronts, Rob Ostermaier documents these realities through the lens of Consociate Media’s regional storytelling practice. Based in Gloucester, our connection to these communities runs deeper than a single exhibition — it reflects years of engagement across the coast.

See the full series at York and Main, exhibition closing tomorrow! More details in our comments.

We had the honor of serving as the communications and reporting arm of this Delegation, tasked with sharing the stories today and into the future the relationships developed, knowledge gathered and opportunities seized.

A member of the House of Lords perhaps said it best about the impact of a Delegation like this and why it's so important.

"If people feel secure - secure in their jobs, secure in their homes, and feel that they live in safe, strong communities, and that they and their families have opportunities in the future, the seeds of division that are being sown by some do not land on fertile ground. Creating opportunity through regional growth is a hugely important part of creating the kind of society that we want to live in and be proud of for the future.” -Nick Forbes, The Lord Forbes of Newcastle CBE

There’s something special about seeing a story become part of someone’s home.

Through our Working Waterfronts exhibition, the work of Rob Ostermaier is doing just that—finding its way off the gallery walls at York and Main and into the homes of people who feel connected to these stories of life on the water.

The exhibit will be up through March 29 (just in time for the Gloucester Daffodil Festival), so there’s still time to experience it—and take a piece or two of it home with you.

Even better? Proceeds support Hold Fast and their mission to help veterans living with PTSD rediscover purpose, healing and a love for life through working on the water.

Art that tells a story. Stories that give back.

Heading downriver with a fresh order aboard — a reminder that along Virginia’s coast, the water is both livelihood and legacy.

Photographed by Rob Ostermaier, this image is part of Consociate Media’s continued storytelling work throughout waterfront communities. As a Gloucester-based business, elevating local industries and the people behind them is a natural extension of who we are.

Learn more in our comments and attend the exhibition at York and Main before it closes this Sunday, March 29.
