It has been a sad few days for the SEO industry.

I regularly read Bill’s posts for google patent commentary and insights. They were extremely helpful in understanding search algorithms and predicting what might rank. I don’t think we will have someone as dedicated to the SEO community who read through dense US Patent files to extract information and actually write about it.

Condolences to his friends and family.

As business owners we are stuck answering the phone. What do we get more of now? Spam calls. This has some helpful information about how to lower the frequency of spam calls. Here is a great post on 2FA SMS. Don't rely on 2FA via your phone to keep your accounts secure. Your password is your first line of defence. We always recommend randomized passwords stored in a vault program. Avoid easily gleaned personal dates, names, words, etc. Use other 2FA methods when available.

Easy to phish. If you know some basic information about the person, you can get the PIN changed.

Easy to spoof. It is very easy to spoof an SMS message. There is no SSL or certificate to verify where it really came from.”

Two factor authentication (2FA) provides an extra layer of security that passwords alone can’t provide. Requiring an extra step for users to verify their identity reduces the chance a bad actor can gain access to

Google is rolling out a new update starting today. Ranking fluctuations should be expected over the next few weeks. Maybe they will be nice since it 2020... Remember don't panic and change things right away since they do roll back or tweak updates if they have unexpected consequences. You may end up hurting your site by being overly reactive.

If you a running Facebook Ads right now just be aware that there has been regular account bans happening a well as rejected ads due to "Unacceptable Business Practices Policy".

Nearly all cases are not actual Policy Violations but a bug from an algorithm change due to the election or an update.

If your account is disabled request a review from either the email you receive from facebook or from the support notifications in your dashboard.

Don't panic and think you are actually banned (unless you have been running ads that were a little sketchy.) Most cases this has been worked out within a few hours.

At this time try not to do too many changes to ads unless needed.

It is good to also point out that this is why it is good to have more than one marketing channel for your business.

What is a common theme with hackers?

The good ones wait until they can inflict the most damage. This is particularly alarming since it was the clients who were extorted for money using their contact information.

The hackers waited nearly two years to implement their end game. With more websites being interconnected with internal processes and networks, digital security is something that needs to be taken seriously.

Especially with mental health being prime for client extortion. (I am sure some of you may have received those emails "I saw what you did on your phone's camera or zoom meeting".. "Pay me in bitcoin")

Imagine ", I have your case notes from " They wouldn't even need the notes to make a convincing threat.
