Rising ba****ck riding star shines at FWSSR Pro Rodeo Tournament

by Susan Kanode

FORT WORTH, Texas, (Jan. 29, 2024) --- Sam Petersen showed fans at the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo ProRodeo Tournament why he is a rising star on Monday.

Petersen posted the highest score in round one of Bracket 7 in Dickies Arena with 88.5 points on United Pro Rodeo’s horse named Whiskey Trip. He earned $2,000 and put himself on track for a qualification to the Semi-Finals later this week.

That’s good news for the Helena, Montana, resident who is a sophomore at Clarendon (Texas) College. He competed in high school rodeo for his home state, earning the all-around championship at the National High School Finals Rodeo and finishing as reserve champion in both the ba****ck riding and steer wrestling. Now, he has added a College National Finals Rodeo (CNFR) qualification in the ba****ck riding and is working towards competing at rodeo’s championships, the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (NFR).

Last year when he finished 19th in his rookie year, just four spots out of the top 15 who qualify. This year, he is hoping to qualify for the CNFR and NFR in the same year. The multi-generation rodeo competitor is currently 17th in the world and a win here would move him up substantially.

In the tie-down roping 2020 world champion Shad Mayfield, from Clovis, New Mexico, got the win. Mayfield stopped the clock in 8.3 seconds to earn $2,000. He joined the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association in 2018 and while he has had a lot of success in his career, he has yet to earn a Fort Worth championship.

Summer Kosel is coming off of her first NFR qualification in barrel racing and is hoping to be back in Las Vegas in December. She and her great horse Apollo stopped the clock in 16.61 seconds to finish at the top of round one.

All of these contestants will have their second round on Tuesday night, which will complete all of the brackets and determine who is moving on to Wednesday’s Wild Card round and who goes directly to Thursday and Friday’s Semi-Finals.

Winners advance to Semi-Finals from Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo’s Bracket 3

by Susan Kanode

FORT WORTH, Texas, (Jan. 24, 2024) --- Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo (FWSSR) contestants in bracket 3 gave their best efforts in round two Wednesday, aiming to add to their earnings and earn a berth at Dickies Arena in the Semi-Finals.

The top two money earners in each bracket of the FWSSR ProRodeo Tournament are assured a spot in the Semi-Finals while the third highest money winner advances to next week’s Wild Card round.
A winning check in the bracket is worth $2,000 and that often is enough money to get another chance. However, it all depends on what the other contestants in the bracket do. On night one, ba****ck rider Garrett Shadbolt from Merriman, Nebraska finished at the top. Night two saw him place second. Those two checks put him at the top of the leaderboard heading into the Semi-Finals.

In the steer wrestling, three cowboys tied for first place Wednesday and that earned Dakota Eldridge from Elko, Nevada, a spot in the Semi-finals. Stephen Culling from Fort St. John, British Columbia, and Jace Melvin, from Fort Pierre, South Dakota, tied Eldridge’s time of 4.5. Culling advances to the Wild Card while Melvin must wait until the end of bracket 7 to see if he is the highest money winner in the non-qualifier pool. The other Semi-Finals qualifier is Will Lummus from Byhalia, Mississippi, who won the first round.
Justin Macha from Needville, Texas, used the qualifying system to get into Fort Worth’s rodeo. The 20-year pro rodeo veteran now makes his living outside the rodeo arena as a pecan broker. He won the tie-down roping at the Johnson County Sherriff’s Posse PRCA Rodeo in Cleburne to have an opportunity to rope in Dickies Arena. He made the most of that chance, winning the second round and qualifying for the Semi-Finals.

Hailey Kinsel and her great mare “Sister” won the barrel racing again on Wednesday. They stopped the clock in 16.48 seconds and have won $4,000 here already. Sister, whose American Quarter Horse Association registered name is DM Sissy Hayday, took Kinsel to championships here in 2019 and 2020. They have also finished in second place and nearly always earn a big check.

Bracket 4 will begin at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday where the arena will be filled with purple for the annual TCU night.
