Embracing the Unexpected: Life Lessons from “The Book With No Pictures”
One of my favorite books I got from my kids was “The Book With No Pictures” by B.J. Novak. The pages are blank in the sense that there are no illustrations. The wild twists and turns have the reader engaging in such ridiculous and nonsensical words that have to be read aloud! It becomes this animated and articulated story that can take on a life of its own- an adventure you’ll want to read over and over again!
Yet beyond the laughter, there are profound lessons to be drawn from this relatively simple book—lessons that can resonate deeply with all facets of our lives.
While “The Book With No Pictures” demonstrates the impact of spoken words in a lighthearted way, the Bible emphasizes the profound effect our words can have on ourselves and others In James 3, the author writes about the shrewdness of the tongue- how it can burn forests and cut deeply yet is the same tongue that blesses and worships. At the end of the chapter, we find hope- “but the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere”! In our businesses, this truth is important—our words can build up, inspire, and lead, or they can tear down and discourage. As Christian entrepreneurs, we are called to speak life into our colleagues, clients, and communities, using our words to glorify God
