PSA: Do NOT relocate wild animals!

We get asked about it all the time, and sadly see the real life results of relocation even when we strongly advise against it. We follow the DNR which does not condone the removal of wildlife for any kind of nuisance reason. Most wild animals's habitat/home range is incredibly important to them and is a major factor in their ability to eat properly, shelter properly, and reproduce properly.
Captured and relocated wildlife almost always suffer from these actions and often return to the original area anyway. So, not only do humans not solve their "pest" problems, but they also create problems for the animal.
This groundhog (or woodchuck) experienced just that. She was captured and removed from a property, only to return to the exact same place, but now starving, thin, and lethargic. After about a week with us she is definitely getting her energy back but we still want her to put on more weight before we release.

We understand wildlife can cause damage to manmade structures and land - but we need everyone to remember and understand that it was THEIR home FIRST. Humans took over wild areas and have forced animals out for a long time. Wild animals don't have an agenda against humans, all they want is to live a successful life, just like us. We firmly believe that we should be trying to live in balance with the wild world around us as much as possible.

If you're dealing with issues at your home caused by a wild animal PLEASE research and consider alternatives to relocation.

For groundhogs, we typically recommend placing an all natural scent deterrent in their burrows to encourage them to find a new homebase on their own. (Search for "botanical rodent repellent")

Something brought to our attention... Don't forget to recycle your yard signs!

Your yard sign can be recycled in Kent County, Michigan IF:
1️⃣ it is made of corrugated plastic, and
2️⃣ if you separate the stand (metal or plastic) from the sign -- this part cannot be recycled in your curbside recycling cart or at our recycling drop-offs

Once you've done those 2 things, you can place the yard sign in your curbside recycling cart and be one step closer to having your yard ready for winter!

Don't need to keep your glasses? Find a recycle bin inside the branch! They will be sent to Latin America to view the eclipse in October 2024.
