JUNE 6, 2024. The 80th Anniversary of the Normandy, France Invasion which turned the tide of World War II toward the allied forces favor. Over 100,000 troops attack by land, sea and air which resulted in over 4,400 deaths. We honor these courageous men for what they did and thank God for their service. Many of them 18-21 year old boys.
My grandfather, Corporal James Ball served in WWII, and was part of the troops sent to France and Belgium months after D-Day. Thankfully he returned home alive. After his death at age 87, I inherited his service uniforms, and found out they fit me perfectly. They remind me that I come from a rich heritage of service, and I should also serve my country in any way I can to secure our freedom and way of life that so many died to defend.
Greatly moved by their sacrifice, I put on grandpa’s uniform, picked up my trumpet, and made my way to several VFW Halls and the Grapevine city library where groups waited for me. After a brief reminder of the price paid for our freedom on D-Day, I asked for help with my large American flag made of parachute nylon which is compacted into a small backpack. As it is pulled out, a thrilling surprise comes over the people as the flag grows to 18 feet in length and over 30 people stand holding it side by side in reverent silence.
I play TAPS on my trumpet and see tears in the eyes of many, overcome by the moment. I let the magnitude resonate in their hearts, then ask for assistance to fold the flag which takes many to hold, fold, and not touch the ground. Gently, they return the flag to the backpack, many still overwhelmed by emotion.
How great it is to remember our incredible American identity and brand! 🇺🇸
