Mr. Wonderful From Shark Tank Says That Data Is The New Oil!

This weekend as I was watching College Football and the World Series on Saturday night a video popped up on my Instagram feed from Kevin O’ Leary aka Mr. Wonderful on Shark Tank.

The video was short, but to the point about using data.

So many small business owners have been talking about getting this data for decades, yet few collect this data, and even less use the data.

We had a busy week last week, and got a bit of bad news about my daughter’s dog Otis. Otis has lived a long life, she got him as a gift around her 5th birthday so he’s going on 14 human years and 90 dog years.

He’s been having some heart issues and the vet had to deliver the tough news that it’s probably time to consider putting Otis down.

My daughter and her Mom (my ex-wife, whom I do have a good relationship with) have been preparing for this day as his health has become more and more fragile over the last few months, but you’re probably never really ready for the day that it comes from the vet.

My daughter of course was very sad and didn’t want to come home from school to find her dog had died while she was at school. Thursday and Friday she stayed home with Otis while her Mom was at work to care for Otis.

When I got the news I wanted to find a couple of ways to make sure that She and her Mom have some great memories with Otis. Thursday afternoon we went to the Paint & Pottery place in our hometown and made some picture frames and coffee mugs with his paw print.

Then I reached out to a friend who now is a photographer and really loves to do dog photo sessions. She gratefully re-arranged her schedule. Then she found a great place to take great photos because the weather turned cold and rainy so outside photos looked out of the picture.

On Saturday Morning we were able to get a lot of photos for Presley and her Mom.

A few thoughts I shared with my daughter as we talked through this challenge.

First, Otis lived a long and happy life. He was blessed with a great family to care for him for his entire life and was a great friend for her entire childhood. That’s something to be thankful for.

Second, you could spend the time from getting bad news to mope and cry, or you can use it as a time to celebrate with Otis and create some beautiful memories.

So that’s what we did.

We’re all handed these challenges in life and everyone has a choice as to how they handle them.

My daughter has said thank you to me more than a dozen times for making these two things happen over the last couple of days.

Hopefully, it’s a lesson she can carry with her for the rest of her life.
