Honoring Freedom: Juneteenth 2025

At Chris North Associates Graphics, we pause to reflect on the significance of Juneteenth—a powerful reminder of justice, freedom, and the enduring pursuit of equality.

Juneteenth (short for “June Nineteenth”) commemorates the day in 1865 when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to enforce the Emancipation Proclamation and ensure that all enslaved people were set free—two and a half years after it was first issued.

Though Confederate General Robert E. Lee had surrendered two months earlier, the reality of freedom had yet to reach many in Texas. That changed when U.S. General Gordon Granger read General Orders No. 3 aloud:

“The people of Texas are informed that, in accordance with a proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free.”

Juneteenth marks the true end of slavery in the United States and is recognized as the longest-running African American holiday. On June 17, 2021, it became an official federal holiday. This year, Juneteenth will be observed on Thursday, June 19, 2025.
