There is a little competition around here when the calves cross the scale.

Everybody calls out a weight before Mom gets the official number. Somebody gets bragging rights. Somebody is usually off enough that we remind them about it for a while.

But there is a serious reason we enjoy days like this.

We want to know what these cattle actually did.

Weaning weights go in the books then transferred to the database. DNA samples get collected in the chute and then shipped to the lab in Lincoln. Contemporary groups get compared. Sire lines start separating themselves. And little by little, opinion gets replaced with information.

Because cattle cost too much today to breed them on hope.

We still believe in looking at the cattle. We still believe there is no substitute for knowing the cow herd. But every additional piece of good data gives us another chance to reduce risk, make a better mating and learn which genetics are actually moving BSG forward.

That matters to us, and we hope it matters to the people investing in our genetics.

The best part is that we still get to do a lot of it together.

The cattle change. The tools get better. The family part stays pretty much the same.

A sincere Thank You to Bruce Everhart for inviting Phillip and Luke to tour Everhart Herefords ahead of this weekend’s open house.

Bruce was a tremendous host, taking the time to walk us through the cattle and explain the breeding decisions behind them. His attention to detail was evident throughout an exceptional set of show-quality heifers, productive cows and exciting sire prospects. Of course, the trip would not have been complete without scoping out Longest Yard!

What impressed us most was Bruce’s commitment to producing cattle that balance all the demands of modern beef production: maintaining the phenotype desired here in Indiana, producing cattle that rank highly for the EPDs and indexes the industry demands, and doing it all with cows that aren’t going to eat you out of house and home. Bruce’s breeding philosophy and ours at BSG are awfully similar.

As a past president of the American Hereford Association, Bruce has given a great deal to the Hereford breed, and that same dedication is evident throughout his program there west of Waldron. We wish Bruce and the entire Everhart family all the best this weekend. We know their open house will be a smashing success!
