Welcome to Freelance Friday!
2027 marks my 20th year as a graphic designer, so leading up to that, I thought it would be fun to showcase and spotlight some of my favorite projects over the years, not just to show off, but to also say thank you to the people who have made this such an amazing journey.

In 2012, I was introduced to Professor Tom Douglass in the English Department at and tapped to design a show poster for a special guest, US Poet Laureate Philip Levine. After discussing the project with Tom, we agreed that the poster should reflect Philip’s work more so than being a “floating head” poster.

Having grown up in industrial Detroit, Levine’s poetry is best known for its powerful, gritty, and ultimately empathetic focused on the working class. He himself began working in auto factories at the age of 14 to support his family. Pulling from my own experience growing up in rural eastern NC, the image of a farmer or a mechanic came to mind pausing to have a conversation. In doing so, they more often than not would pull a handkerchief or cloth from their pocket or from nearby and begin wiping their hands in order to shake hands at the end.

I composed the photo with a friend as the hand model and delivered the poster. The event for The Contemporary Writers Series was held at the Greenville Museum of Art with readings from Philip and a Q&A. I found out later that he had loved the poster and special requested that print be sent to him.

Tom and I became friends and continued to collaborate on projects for the series as well as the Veterans Writers Program. But that is a story for another day.

Jenni Farrow makes ugly chocolates. No, this isn’t a put-down, literally she makes . These handcrafted, small-batch & ethically sourced chocolates are made with locally sourced premium ingredients with unique flavor combinations that blend traditional & modern influences, and a fresh-made approach.

I have the fantastic fortune to have worked with Jenni on several interesting projects over the years. This week we’re looking at 2022 and the JUC-topus design/logo. Featured on JUC packaging and even as a delicious peanut butter toffee coin (so not kidding), this design features a giant, skeletal, eye-patch wearing, pirate-y sea monster snacking down on a batch of original JUC chocolates. Totally random, totally whimsical, totally on brand.

If you want to snack on some of Jenni’s UGLY Chocolates, you’re in luck! You can find the JUC booth at the Festival at the NC State Fairgrounds May 15 - 17 in Raleigh, NC.

This project is a recipient of a Badge of Honor from and was published in LogoLounge Book 14 (2024).

This week we are hitting the way-back machine to 2017 to the Oakwood School’s OASES (Outdoor Agricultural Student Eco-Station) Farm. Students utilize this micro-farm to learn and grow in and out of the classroom. Elements from the farm are incorporated into the logo (sunflowers, hens, and growing their own produce). The look/feel of the design also brings in an old-timey, vintage farm aesthetic.

This was the first of many collaborations with Lauren Jahrsdorfer and . 2026 marks the 30th anniversary of the school. Here’s to 30 years of Oakwood!

To kick things off, we’re starting with the 2023 Greenville Museum of Art logo project! This was a dream project and I had the opportunity to work/collaborate with the team at GMoA as well as another local creative Rose Bogue to develop and update the logo/brand for the museum. The goal was to reflect the history of the museum while also embracing its dedication of being a living art institution that embraces the classic and modern. The Greenville Museum of Art continues the mission of inspiring, educating, and connecting people through the visual arts by way of their collection, exhibitions, and programs.
