WINTER STORM WATCH IN EFFECT

Day 0: Wednesday, January 19th, 2022 - This is the best day to stock up on supplies. Be sure you have working flashlights and backup batteries. Keep at least three days of food, water (a gallon recommended). Store extra blankets and several layers of warm clothing in case of a power outage. Treat the roads with salt

Day 1: Thursday, 1/20/22 - All winter storm preparations should be near completion. You will have some time during the early morning and afternoon to get last minute supplies as there will be a chance of rain through 9 pm.

Day 2: Friday, 1/21/22 - Winter storm impacts may be felt the greatest on this day, be sure to conserve heat and electricity if possible. Make sure you bundle up if you have to step outside for any length of time. This also includes watching your step and stay away from ice coated surfaces. If possible, table salt/antifreeze may help if there is too much. Stay tuned to local outlets for the latest information.

Let's talk dew point temperatures!
Here in the south we know when the dew point temperatures are high - we're going to deal with humidity from all the extra moisture in the air.

Dew point temperatures are like the needle on a gas gauge of our cars. The closer that gauge gets to FULL ⛽️(or the closer you get to air temperature), we're at 100% moisture content... Time for those clouds to start wringing out like a washcloth.

The further that needle gets away from FULL or actual air temperature, less moisture in the air - so there's nothing to wring out of the clouds.

This whole concept is CRUCIAL for snowfall or any precipitation at all!

We WILL be below freezing before sunrise tomorrow (Picture 1), but that gas needle - she's on empty.

The sweet spot (Picture 2), 10am, we're ready for winter precip.....but

When our tank is full, the gas needle as matched up to the actual air temp - We're above freezing at that point (Picture 3). So.. just rain.

**These vertical air temperatures are for Tarboro, NC specifically. Timing will be different in surrounding areas; however the crossover from wintry mix to rain will be quick for all of the eastern side of NC**

As a reminder, this weather system currently moving into the Carolinas is quite complex. I saw a major focus on the wintry precipitation earlier today. While that is a concern, the more important threats for this weather system includes the risk of tornadoes, flooding rains, and gusty winds.

Subtropical Storm Wanda finally forms in the open Atlantic Ocean. Luckily, Wanda will remain well away from the US mainland, but rest assured, hurricane season still continues until November 30th so any storm could still form between now and the end of hurricane season.
