A RAID is not a substitute for a backup! Many people choose to use dual-disk RAID 1 for data storage. In theory, RAID 1 mirrors data across two disks. From years of experience: it often doesn't work. Last week, one of my own external RAID 1 drives had a failure. One drive clearly was shot based on the noise it was making. The other? Mountable, but not accessible. Thanks to Retrospect, Inc. software, I quickly recovered all my data from my backup. RAID 1 success during last decade: About 30%. Retrospect? 100%.
