One question we get a lot is how quickly we know whether a campaign is working.

The reality is that the first 30 days usually aren’t enough data to justify major changes. Paid media needs a little time to build momentum, especially when you're testing audiences, creative, and messaging.

But that doesn’t mean we’re just waiting around.

There are a few early signals we look at to make sure the campaign is starting off in the right direction:

Engagement rate – Are people interacting with the ads? This is often the first signal that the creative and messaging are resonating with the audience.

Frequency – Are people seeing the ads often enough to remember them? If frequency is extremely low, it may mean the audience is too large for the available budget.

Spend & pacing – Are we delivering impressions as expected? Are bids high enough to actually compete in the auction?

None of these alone determine success after 30 days, and we’re not making sweeping changes that early.

But they do help us spot red flags and make small adjustments so the campaign can build momentum.

Too many strategies treat retargeting like the safety net for performance.

But retargeting only works if people already care.

No awareness → small audiences
No engagement → low intent
No momentum → weak retargeting performance

Strong campaigns build the audience first.

Retargeting simply closes the deal.

When running Meta campaigns for local or regional brands, make sure your location targeting is set to “People living in this location” — not the default “People recently in this location.”

The default option may include travelers or short-term visitors. For destination brands, that may make sense. For most local service providers, schools, healthcare systems, or regional B2B companies — it often doesn’t.

We’ve seen this small oversight quietly impact efficiency and cost per lead.

Paid media success isn’t just about creative and budget. It’s about the details inside the platform and how they all work together.
