Is this a place to go to get your reputation back? The Boston Globe's "Fresh Start" initiative raises interesting questions. Should the media think more in the present about how their coverage impacts lives in the future? The facts do not change, but the news value may diminish over time. Also, a clearer understanding of a newsworthy incident may develop after the story is printed. For example, the media often reports on arrests and names defendants. However, it does not devote the resources to follow up on every reported arrest and whether the defendant was acquitted or convicted. What other situations do you think warrant a "fresh start"?
Similar to “right to forget” programs that have cropped up across the country, the undertaking is meant to address the lasting impact that stories about past embarrassments, mistakes, or minor crimes, forever online, can have on a person’s life.
