I grew up in Santa Maria, but I honestly never knew my hometown logo was one of Christopher Columbus's ships until I saw it displayed on a new sign off the freeway when I came home one year from college. While it's easy to understand by it was chosen as the city's graphic icon, as a designer I always thought it communicated sort of a messy, mixed up message. Santa Maria is not a harbor city nor Italian nor related to Columbus in any way.

What would I design as a logo? I have no idea. 😆

But Santa Maria drew national attention that time our farmers sent ten tons of local broccoli to the elder President Bush after he said he hated it. 🤔

"Logos are a shortcut to memories. Take away the logo, and you remove the connection to all of those moments you associate with that brand.
