I really don't need to add anything else, but...

Running pure lead gen campaigns without doing your homework is like building your house without a foundation.

Both end in disaster.

In 2026, construction leaders with vision know they need balance in today’s market.

They don’t just push promos or brand building assets. Instead, they’re aiming to hit a balance between short-term lead generation and long-term market share growth.

I had a conversation with a client recently that sparked a newsletter about how I think about the different ad sectors for paid ads.

If I were a contractor doing $1M a year in revenue and wanted to use paid ads to start going bankrupt, here would be my first move:

Set location targeting to EVERYWHERE.

It sounds funny in this context, but last Saturday I reviewed a Google Ads campaign that a client had set up themselves. The targeting: the entire US including Alaska and Hawaii.

Their service area: a 50-100 mile radius around their home base.

Basically, they were just handing Google a donation and not getting any appreciable results because they didn’t understand how the system worked.

So, if you are a contractor who is running paid ads and not getting great results, check your location targeting. I guarantee you will see higher quality leads if you make sure it’s set up correctly.

If I were a contractor in Year 1 of business, here’s the top 3 moves I would make to stand out from my larger, established competitors.

1. Create a really strong workmanship warranty.

Make the terms for as long as you are comfortable with covering your own mistakes. The best contractors use a long time period to help the customer feel secure, but in reality, they fix anything that is their mistake no matter how long ago they made that mistake.

2. Publish it publicly on my website.

Not only is a public statement of warranty terms boost a customer’s confidence in you, we have also found it to be a big SEO boost to a relatively new website.

3. Make sure my work is of the highest quality.

This should be a no-brainer. Number one, if you don’t prioritize quality, this workmanship warranty play will eat your shirt. Number two, it’s the best way to attract and retain the customers you really want to work with.

The contractors I see winning in business and online are following this playbook. Internalize it.

Contractors need a fully custom-coded website to be successful…or not?

Personally, I think the custom-coded or nothing thought pattern is bogus. We have plenty of great semi-custom sites that load quickly and perform well in search. (Plus look good) Most of this performance comes from caring about the outcome, not what platform you are on.

TEST RESULTS: Interesting, the video we thought would perform did not. The most “boring” ad (to us) killed it. Here’s my take:

These video ads for a portable storage building dealer launched on 6/6/26 and ran through 7/17/26. 41 days total.

- Center Lofted Porch Cabin: 16 leads @ $15.45 per lead

The interesting thing here is we only had 1,815 video plays over the last 30 days and only 8.81% of those played the entire video. But, the video was short and to the point with a very clear call to action at the end. It also appealed to the broadest audience out of the three. The text hook hit the pain point instantly and the body of the ad then positioned my client as the fix to their pain.

- Mancave: 7 leads @ $44.86 per lead

5,020 video plays here. This ad won on every metric except leads generated. The video itself was interesting and the call to action was very clear, but it was primarily solving a man’s problem. It’s surprising how many women are actually doing the shopping in this industry. The text hook drove into having a cluttered garage right away and then positioned my client as the way to get a place for his tools and toys.

- Home Office: 0 leads

Only 5 video plays in the last 30 days here. The client and I both thought this video (or maybe the building) was the most interesting. But it turns out that there aren’t a lot of work-from-homers and even fewer that want to buy a building with spray foam and an electrical package. Pair that with the video being more of an explainer and the text not addressing the pain point as clearly, people just didn’t respond. And when people don’t respond, Meta cuts delivery.

Takeaway: 1. Just because you like something, doesn’t mean your audience will. And you aren’t your audience. 2. When you tell Meta to optimize for leads, it will. 3. Be clear and concise. When you lose someone’s attention, you’ve lost the sale.
