Earlier today, PNA colleagues gathered for lunch to celebrate Melissa Bevan Melewsky as her time with PNA draws to a close.

PNA Director of Government Affairs Jan Murphy recently participated in a panel discussion titled “Covering Democracy: How Local Journalists Keep Communities Informed” at Millersville University's sixth annual Sustainable Development Goals Conference at the Ware Center for the Arts in Lancaster.

The panel also featured Colby Itkowitz, a former Washington Post reporter and Lancaster County Local Journalism Fund board member, and Joanna Zuckerman Bernstein, deputy director at Spotlight PA. The discussion was moderated by Mary Dolheimer, the university’s senior director of public relations.

The nearly hourlong discussion covered challenges resulting from the decline in news staffing, decisions newsroom leaders face in prioritizing and organizing coverage, alternative funding models for and policies to support local journalism, and the civic consequences of reduced news coverage.

PNA Director of Marketing and Membership Jane Hungarter and Director of Government Affairs Jan Murphy recently visited The Chestnut Hill Local, meeting with Co-Editor Donna Shaw and the newspaper’s editorial staff.

Shaw, along with Publisher Laura Lucas and Co-Editor Jeff Meade, volunteer their time to support the independently owned community newspaper. During the visit, the journalists shared their enthusiasm for pitching stories and covering the local people, organizations and events that have a meaningful impact on readers’ lives. The Local has also expanded its coverage to include neighboring Germantown and Roxborough.

The Local is working with four Temple University interns this semester, including Julianna Musser, who joined the newspaper this summer through the PNA Foundation’s internship program and was retained for the fall semester.

Shaw praised Musser’s work, noting that she consistently followed through on assignments, was highly organized and successfully balanced multiple projects. She also worked well under the pressure of tight deadlines and contributed extensively to the newspaper’s photography.

The Chestnut Hill Local was also named a 2026 PNA Foundation News Organization of the Year and earned numerous honors in this year’s Professional Keystone Media Awards.

The visit provided an opportunity for PNA to learn more about the Local’s commitment to community journalism and the work of its staff, volunteers and interns to provide meaningful coverage of the communities it serves.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for the PNA Foundation Advertising Awards Luncheon on Thursday, Sept. 17, held in conjunction with the 2026 PNA Advertising Conference. 🏆👏

The luncheon brought together Pennsylvania’s newspaper and media community to honor the winners of the 2026 PNA Foundation Advertising Contest and the Newspaper Hero of the Year Awards, recognizing creativity, innovation and outstanding contributions to the industry.

Congratulations to all of this year’s honorees! Your work represents the talent, dedication and creativity that continue to strengthen Pennsylvania’s news media industry.

We also celebrate the recipients of the John G. Leeser, Jr. Scholarship Awards, who were honored earlier this year at the Student Keystone Event and will be invited to attend the PNA Advertising Conference.

That’s a wrap on the 2026 PNA Advertising Conference! 📰 🏆 Thank you to everyone who joined us in State College from Wednesday, Sept. 16, through Friday, Sept. 18, for three days of learning, networking and conversations focused on the future of media advertising and revenue.

From AI trainings and sales strategies to revenue-building tips, high-performing media sales leadership habits, strategic branded partnerships, hiring for the future and the Google News Initiative, attendees walked away with ideas and insights to put into action.

We loved seeing so many of you at the always-popular Managers Roundtable with PNA President and CEO Bill Cotter, along with the PNA Foundation Advertising Awards Luncheon and so much more.

The Pennsylvania NewsMedia Association Foundation is proud to recognize three individuals as this year’s Newspaper Heroes of the Year, honoring those who demonstrate exceptional service, unwavering support and a lasting commitment to strengthening their communities. 💪📰

At the Times News Lehighton, Rich Danyo, mailroom supervisor, is known as the operation’s backbone, keeping presses running, repairing equipment and supporting colleagues at all hours. Whether fixing machinery, helping drivers on the road or stepping in during emergencies, Danyo exemplifies selfless dedication to both his team and the mission of local news.

In Waynesboro, Dan DeDona, founder of LocalNews1.org, has invested his own time and resources to fill critical local news gaps across Franklin County, Pennsylvania, and Washington County, Maryland. A retired Air Force colonel, DeDona has built a community-focused newsroom from the ground up, championing fair, independent journalism and a strong commitment to the First Amendment.

From Pittsburgh, Jim Lavrinc has spent decades ensuring newspapers reach readers, quietly powering the distribution side of the industry since his days as a paperboy in the 1970s. Even while facing significant health challenges this past year, Lavrinc never missed a delivery and has remained a dedicated mentor to student journalists at the University of Pittsburgh.

Together, these honorees represent the spirit, resilience and impact of the news media industry, often working behind the scenes but always making a difference where it matters most.

Winners were honored at the Awards Luncheon during PNA’s Advertising Conference on Sept. 17 in State College.
