I am always inspired by people who have overcome incredible odds to achieve things that most of us take for granted. Whether it’s Hellen Keller learning to communicate, despite being deaf and blind, or Jim Abbott pitching an MLB no-hitter, with one arm. For example, Tony Iommi, one of the pioneering guitar players of heavy metal, who helped form the band Black Sabbath, was missing the tips of 2 of his fingers that he needed to play the guitar! Rick Allen, the drummer for Def Leppard, lost his arm in a car accident, in the middle of his career. He learned to still play one-handed! What did these people have in common? They didn’t give up, and they persevered despite what life dealt them. Consider this your reminder, that whatever difficulties you’re facing, if they are seen or unseen - keep going! You can do this!

Harmonize with Spring - Holidays

In the traditional narratives of each year, Spring is the time of birth, and rebirth. We see this reflected in holidays like Easter, and Passover. St. Patrick’s day, being famously green, takes on the primary color of spring. The color of sprouting plants, youthfulness, freshness, and vitality.

It’s a good time to celebrate the season. Most familial and cultural traditions are rooted in harmonizing with the seasons. Which ones are your favorites? Now’s a good time to eat more greens, bursting with freshness and in season. Eggs factor into a lot of spring dishes as well. Them being a symbol of new life, but also a great source of energy that will be needed for renewed activity and spending more time outdoors.

Acupuncture Theory - Point Selection

Once an acupuncturist has a diagnosis, they can develop a treatment plan consisting of a collection of points and a schedule for how often. While there are hundreds of acupuncture points, in practice we use only a fraction of them.

We’re looking for points that both help the symptoms, and treat the root cause; (which we determined in the diagnosis). Sometimes it’s based on a part of the body (for example, on the stomach for stomach problems). Sometimes it’s based on the channel/meridian (for example, a point on the hand, to open up the nose, because the large intestine channel runs from the hand to the nose).

There are other points that we call, “distal points”. Distal means further from the center. These points give us a lot of flexibility; they connect the body as an integrated whole. We don’t have to focus on points just local to the problem, but can use points on the arms, legs, and ears.
