Historical colors aren't chosen at random. Color can unite us, connect us to our history, and allow us to feel represented.
Today marks a historical and important day as we observe Juneteenth.
Have you ever considered the meaning behind these colors? They aren't random.
While we still have much work to do to ensure Black communities feel safe, we can continually learn to honor and respect our diverse communities.
- Red: Represents the blood of Africans shed on the path to freedom.
- Black: Representative of Black people.
- Green: Connects to the fertile lands of Africa and also represents growth.
- Yellow: Represents wealth and a bright future. Also, a nod to Ethiopia's flag and how they fought off colonial powers.
For those still learning about Juneteenth, on June 19th, 1865, the Union Army arrived with 2,000 troops in Galveston, Texas, and declared by executive decree that enslaved African Americans were free.
Color has and will continue to be a powerful form of language.
