I've got a new website! I've wanted to redesign my own website for a while, and I've finally done it. I'm using some new tools that I really like, so I'm going to take some time to highlight them and explain why I'm so happy to be using them over my next few posts.

What can you get started in 13 weeks?

It feels like this year is flying by, but there's still a LOT of time left to start a new project or wrap up something that's been lingering.

I like to start with a mockup when I'm building a new website. When I know ahead of time what I want the site to look like, it's easier to figure out how to get all the pieces in the right places. I'm working from these two images now to build the site. When the user first goes to the website, they'll see everything in the top image. Scrolling will take them through all the menu sections, but then it will be easy to get back to any section by clicking the menu choices on the left.

With my finished mood board in hand, the next step in rebuilding the website I'm working on is to figure out what I want the site to actually look like. What will the layout be? How do I want it to function?

People looking at a restaurant website are looking for a few key things most of the time:
* Where is it?
* When is it open?
* What type of food do they serve?
* What is the price range of the menu items?
* Can I get takeout/delivery?

This particular restaurant doesn't offer reservations, so there's no need to include that. They do offer catering, though, so that's one more thing to be sure to include.

I like a pretty simple website because I think it makes everything easy for the use to find. I'll share a mockup of the site later this week, but for now, I'm sharing two links to sites that have a particular feature that I like. On both of these sites, you can access all of the content simply by scrolling. They also offer quicker navigation on the left-hand side with a clickable menu.

Step two of my current website redesign is to begin figuring out what it should look like. I created a mood board to guide me in the design process. First I pulled key colors from the logo, and I have those to reference any time I'm specifying a color for any part of the website. I also determined the font used in the logo and found that I am legally able to use it on the website, which is great!

Next, I looked at the restaurant itself. The exterior of the restaurant is covered in shiny corrugated sheet metal. I want to incorporate that feel into the design. This restaurant also has a focus on trains, and there is a lot of red in the building.

I added some photos of food from the restaurant to my mood board, as well as some from the restaurant interior. It would be ideal to get more high-quality food images for the restaurant, but in the short term I can use what I have as placeholders.

Check out the mood board for this project. Next week I'll go into more details about how I used it to develop the website layout and design.

It's time for me to work on a website redesign, and I thought it would be fun to share my process here.

For a little bit of background, I designed the original version of this website using WordPress in 2014 when the restaurant opened. I was pretty proud of the design then, but it wasn't too long before the sight was outdated. It was never optimized for mobile, and there was generally too much content.

I like a pretty simple design that makes it easy for users to find the information they need. I redesigned the website in 2020 and early 2021 as I learned more about user experience and mobile responsiveness. But I've learned even more over the past several months, and I'd like to use that knowledge to create yet another version. This will allow me to practice what I've learned also.
