When cows and horses was the car of choice.

When cows and horses was the car of choice.

Imagine a time when vast herds of cattle were free to graze everywhere in our area. Unconventional โ€œcracker cowboysโ€ tracked wild cows and pigs through the palmettos and marshes.

SPEEDERS YOUโ€™VE BEEN WARNED โ€“ Last Thursday, CCSOโ€™s Traffic Unit was recognized by the Florida Department of Transportation for our efforts in participating in the Enhanced Law Enforcement Engagement (ELEE) program, a six-month long program, earlier this year.

The ELEE program provided multiple law enforcement agencies with opportunities to demonstrate how they promote traffic safety enforcement within their communities and target specific violations on state roadways, documenting the outcomes of their efforts. Agencies also conducted enforcement of traffic safety laws to reduce traffic crashes, serious injuries and fatalities and help stop speeding, aggressive driving and impaired drivers - all while still managing their normal calls for service.

Both Lt. Ball and Sgt. Anstead gladly accepted the award from FDOT, which were 12 TruSpeed S laser radar devices. These split-second speed capturing devices with pin-point targeting will now better equip CCSO deputies to detect speeders at longer distances.

We are so proud of our team for this amazing accomplishment and want to remind motorists to obey all traffic laws and drive at safe speeds with no distractions.

I know a lot of you are still recovering from Ian and are saying "here we go again!", but Nicole will not be another Ian. Tropical storms are often messy. Tree branches down. Scattered power outages. Heavy rain. If you have a tarp on your roof, make sure it is secured because winds may be strong enough to compromise the tarp. Overall, the storm should be manageable. Our weather will deteriorate late Wednesday, and Thursday will be a windy and wet day. The storm is still far enough away that some fine tuning of the forecast track is likely. The heaviest rain and strongest winds will likely be right along the east coast, with rainfall totals and wind speeds dropping as the storm moves inland. I will keep you posted.
