Alternate Routes This Summer
If you’re trying to avoid the potential backup at the Mid-Hudson bridge, here are your best bets:
1. Newburgh-Beacon Bridge (I-84)
• Most common detour, ∼15 min south
• Reliable east-west alternative when Mid-Hudson is jammed
• Toll bridge, but usually moves better than Route 9 during closures 
2. Kingston-Rhinecliff Bridge
• ∼20 min north via Route 9W or 9G
• Good if you’re headed to northern Dutchess/Columbia County. Wide shoulder, good condition 
3. Local roads — use with caution
• Route 9W or Route 44/55 can work, but get congested during peak hours
• Check 511NY.org or the app before you commit — you don’t want to trade one jam for another

If you plan to visit Highland in the coming weeks, plan so you come Route 9w or Route 299 as the Mid-Hudson bridge construction takes up to 90+ minutes to cross during peak times.
