Sales versus marketing is the wrong debate.

You don't win because one is better.

You win when both work together.

Marketing creates awareness and interest.

Sales creates trust and decisions.

Think of marketing like flirting. You're getting attention and creating connection.

Think of sales like dating. You're figuring out compatibility and deciding if the relationship makes sense.

Here's where companies get stuck.

Marketing blames sales for poor follow up.

Sales blames marketing for bad leads.

Meanwhile, growth stalls.

Quick exercise:

Pick one deal you lost recently.

Ask:

What happened before the first conversation?
What happened after the first conversation?
Where did momentum break?

That's usually where the real issue is.

How does your organization divide responsibility between sales and marketing today?

Before you commit to any marketing investment (a new vendor, a new channel, a new campaign) there's a five-question check that takes about 10 minutes and can save you thousands.

The questions aren't complicated. Things like: Do you have a clear strategy that this tactic actually supports? Is someone accountable for running it, with real time to own it?

Most MSPs skip this entirely. They see a tactic that looks promising, a competitor doing something on LinkedIn, or a vendor making a compelling pitch, and they move. Without a foundation, even smart tactics produce nothing.

In our next 22-Minute Marketing Engine Tune-Up, I'm sharing the full Pre-Spend Marketing Readiness Check, along with 10 rules that should sit underneath every marketing decision you make. Come to the live session and I'll send you the one-page worksheet to use going forward.

Short, practical, and no pitch at the end.

Most B2B companies are tracking the wrong marketing metrics.

They obsess over clicks, impressions, website traffic, and followers.

Meanwhile, they completely miss the moments that actually drive buying decisions.

Have you heard of a trigger event?

A trigger event is the thing that happens right before someone finally reaches out.

Something changed.
Something broke.
Something became urgent.

Maybe referrals slowed down.
Maybe they lost a big client.
Maybe leadership realized growth has stalled.
Maybe a cybersecurity scare suddenly moved “marketing” higher on the priority list.

That’s when they start looking for help.

Here’s the important part most companies miss:

If you can identify the trigger events that happen in your ideal client’s journey, you can align your marketing and sales outreach to show up at the exact right time.

That changes everything.

Because timing matters.

The best messaging in the world will struggle if the buyer doesn’t feel the pain yet.

One practical takeaway:

Sit down with your sales team and list the top 5 things that typically happen right before a prospect contacts you. Then build content, outreach, and campaigns around those moments.

That’s how you stop guessing and start becoming more relevant.

What trigger events tend to create the most urgency for your clients?

MSPs build their businesses on long term relationships, and many rely on QBRs and regular check-ins to maintain them. But too often, those meetings turn into routine status updates instead of conversations that actually strengthen the relationship and demonstrate real business value. In this episode, Melissa Hockenberry from First Things First Training and Consulting and I explore the mistakes MSPs make with client retention, why the traditional QBR approach needs to change, and a few simple ways to add more value in every client interaction.

Here's something most marketing vendors won't tell you.

The reason your last marketing investment didn't deliver isn't because you picked the wrong channel. It's not because the timing was off. And it's probably not because you spent too little.

It's because the foundation wasn't in place before the spending started.

Most MSPs jump straight to tactics (ads, LinkedIn, email campaigns) without the engine that makes them work. The result is wasted budget, inconsistent results, and the slow conclusion that marketing just doesn't work for MSPs.

It does. But not without the right foundation.

In our next 22-Minute Marketing Engine Tune-Up, I'm walking through the 10 rules I wish every MSP knew before spending a dollar on marketing. These aren't abstract principles. They're the specific things I see missing every time a marketing investment goes sideways.

22 minutes. No fluff. Real clarity.

A lot of MSPs, IT consultants, SaaS founders, and B2B service leaders make the same mistake in their marketing.

They spend too much time talking about their process.

Clients don't buy frameworks.
They don't buy your methodology.
They don't care how many steps are in your system.

They buy outcomes.

They buy confidence that you can solve a painful problem and help them get where they want to go.

Your process matters. It builds credibility. It shows there’s structure behind what you do.

But it’s rarely the reason someone hires you.

A cybersecurity company isn’t hired because they have a 12-step security framework.

They get hired because clients want to reduce risk and sleep better at night.

An MSP isn’t hired because of a ticketing workflow.

They get hired because businesses want reliable technology, fewer issues, and predictable support.

A SaaS founder doesn’t win because of product architecture diagrams.

They win because customers believe the platform will save time, improve efficiency, or drive growth.

The framework supports the outcome.
It is not the outcome.

One of the best things you can do with your messaging and sales conversations is clearly communicate:

“What changes for the client after working with us?”

That’s what people are buying.

When you look at your messaging right now, are you leading with process or outcomes?

Have you ever tried a new marketing tactic and thought, “This is it. This will finally work.”Maybe it was SEO.Maybe Link...

Have you ever tried a new marketing tactic and thought, “This is it. This will finally work.”

Maybe it was SEO.

Maybe LinkedIn content.
Maybe ads, webinars, email campaigns, or hiring an agency.

For a moment, it feels exciting. You feel hopeful again. This time will be different.

Then a few months pass.

The results are underwhelming. Leads are inconsistent. The momentum fades. And you start looking for the next tactic that might finally fix things.

Sound familiar?

This happens to a lot of B2B companies. Not because they are lazy or doing nothing. In fact, they are usually doing quite a bit.

The problem is something else.

It is alignment.

Most companies do not have a lead generation problem. They have a marketing engine problem.

Think of it like a car.

If the fuel, parts, and mechanic are not working together, the car will sputter no matter how hard you press the gas. Adding another tactic is like pressing the gas pedal harder. It does not fix the real issue.

When your strategy, plan, and leadership are aligned, your marketing starts to work the way it should.

Tactics become more effective. Leads become more consistent. Growth becomes easier to manage.

If you want help building that kind of marketing engine, comment "Accelerator" and I will DM you our Marketing Engine Mastery Accelerator. It is designed to help you stop guessing and start building a system that actually works.
