My Tree of Life quilt won a first place ribbon at the Oregon state fair! This is a special one to me because it is a replica of the quilt my great great grandmother made which won first place in the Kansas State Fair in 1873!

This was a quilt that I made in about 1973 (when I was in high school). My grandmother told me I should stitch it together instead of tying it together with yarn…. I didn’t really understand what she was talking about. Who knew 50 years later I would be stitching quilts together for myself and others! (Swipe right to see finished results)

My first QOV (Quilt of Valor) donation was awarded to a WWII Veteran!

This is the letter I received from our local QOV group leader:
Pam - On Sunday morning, at a park in Hubbard, we awarded the QOV you made to Virgil P., a US Navy veteran who served from January 1946 through December 1947. He was 17 when he enlisted, right after the end of WWII. He served all over the world, and especially in the area of the Bikini Atoll (Marshall Islands) during testing to see how various ships would fare after being hit with nuclear bombs (!). He loved his quilt and the story of your dad serving in the Navy in WWII. He was wrapped in his quilt by two of his sons.

On the right side of this picture is his grandson, Jacob P., who served in the US Marine Corps and is currently serving in the US Army Reserves. He was wrapped in his quilt (made by a quiltmaker in Tualatin who makes QOVs in honor of her mother's service in the Women Marines during WWII) by his mother and his life-long best friend.

Thank you for making that quilt. I want you to be aware that it is being treasured by a US Navy veteran who served not long after your father!

The studio is getting a little crowded as these machines seem to be multiplying! This little tan Singer is just like my very first sewing machine, that I got for Christmas when I was 6. I could never get that one to sew and this one won't make a stitch either.... what do you suppose the odds are of getting the same exact machine on ebay that I had when I was 6? The Blue & Chrome is like the Morse machine that I had as a teen ager, I sewed most of my clothes on that all through high school (yes I usually looked like a dork!) The large black machine is very similar to the 2nd sewing machine I had (when I couldn't make the little tan one sew). I soon tired of it because it was a straight stitch only. This one is a Singer, with a direct drive motor, I've been told it will sew through anything, even leather, I'm plan to put it to the test! The last one, is a Singer Featherweight. A highly collectable machine, small enough to take along in the motorhome with me. I already have a quilt kit purchased and will give that a try next time we go camping! The cabinet it is in, is a replica of a "Singer 68" cabinet that was made especially for Featherweights. IF you can find an original, they are usually pretty expensive (one recently went on ebay for $3000! My wonderful hubby built this cabinet for me.... it will be treasured!
