Hā o ka Pō (Breath of the Night)

Episode 16, April 2, 2025 2:30am

Kīlauea continues to erupt into the darkness, its steady fountains lighting up Halemaʻumaʻu Crater. The glow, drifting plume, and stars piercing the night sky come together to reveal a scene of creation both above in the heavens and here on earth.

This image is part of Bearing Witness, a photo show at featuring the perspectives of three photographers documenting this eruption. The show ends this week November 9, 2025 so if you’re visiting Hawaiʻi , be sure to stop by before it’s gone.

Come experience the beauty, power, and story of this eruption in person.

, & for having me onboard with this amazing show.

Friday, October 24, 2025 on the slopes of Mauna Kea, I managed about 20 minutes of shooting Comet Lemmon before the clouds, wind, and rain moved in. I looked northwest into the deepening twilight, set up my gear, tracked Lemmon low above the horizon, then scrambled for the truck as the weather closed in. Not the sharpest frames, but enough to say I caught it. Cold, soaked, and tired but stoked I made the effort.

Comet Lemmon (C/2025 A6) was discovered in January 2025 by the Mt. Lemmon Survey. It’s making its closest approach to Earth right now (just under ~0.6 AU on Oct 21) and heads to perihelion on Nov 8. Under dark skies, it may already be visible to the naked eye around magnitude 4–5.

Up Mauna Kea with on a comet mission. The green glow of C/2025 R2 (SWAN) cutting through the Milky Way. Discovered just last month by the SWAN instrument aboard SOHO, this comet made its closest pass to Earth in mid October, about 39 million km away. The emerald color comes from diatomic carbon gas glowing under solar radiation a signature of comets born far beyond the planets.

Episode 35, “Double the Fury”
What a night! Two massive fountains, each blasting over 1,000 feet high. I was out there with two awesome friends and fellow photographers, and we were all in awe watching Tūtū Pele doing her thing.

These fountains roared for about 7 1/2 hours, sending rivers of lava across nearly two thirds of the crater floor and a gas plume soaring over 16,000 feet into the sky. You could feel the heat from a mile away, pure power and energy.

What an absolute pleasure it was to go behind the scenes at the Keck Observatory and learn about the incredible technology that powers this world class telescope. Seeing its sodium wavelength lasers in action was nothing short of awe inspiring, and it was fascinating to witness how all the systems work together to capture data that helps astrophysicists unlock new insights about our universe.
