Before Beyoncé and Jay-Z. Before Cardi and Offset. Ms. Melodie and KRS-One were hip hop's first married couple.

She met him in 1985 when he was homeless in a Bronx shelter. They married, built Boogie Down Productions together, and her verse on Self Destruction became one of the most powerful female performances the golden era ever produced.

Then they divorced. She raised two sons. And slowly, the genre she helped build forgot she existed.

On July 17, 2012, Ramona Scott passed away at 43 years old. No tribute concert. No front page. The cause was never confirmed.

Hip hop's first lady died in silence.

The same culture she helped create never stopped to say thank you.
