There's a decent amount of HTown hustling going on in our city, which means we need more hands.

Here's what you need:

+ punchy, bold, interesting writing
+ social media writing experience
+ know your way around social + Google Analytics
+ confident in social media management platforms [bonus points for knowing Sprout Social]
+ strong understanding of digital data, and how it guides and builds strategy
+ care deeply about this town and making sure we keep small businesses afloat with clever, intentional, ROI driven strategies
+ comfortable living by the creed "no lazy copy"

This call intentionally does not have a requirement for minimum number of years in the industry. Gear up. This is a strategy post that includes specific local tactics.

Google announced last week that they have implemented new strategies to help local small businesses and non-profits survive the business survival marathon that is COVID. Google *increased* Ad Grants to $1bn–– this is a huge deal. Non-profits need to skip, hop, and jump over to applying for this grant.

Google also rolled out a number of tactics to boost small businesses on Google. Here are my quick-hit notes on the big-ticket items:

+ Google Local Service Ads now offer booking functionality–– super helpful for smaller businesses with websites that don't support making appointments.

+ Added functionality to include curbside and delivery options to Google listings

+ Free promoted pins! [usually a paid feature]

+ Financial relief offered through the Small Business Fund

Big shout out to the restaurants and cafes in Houston who are using social media to be transparent about their team's positive COVID cases, and sharing the action plan. Your community sees you and appreciates you.


Within Houston is the same community that rallied during Harvey. When the Coast Guard stopped their search boats when the sun went down at night, the people of Houston stayed out and make sure everyone was safe. This is where we decreed together.


That's the vibe that these restaurants are giving out. Transparency and looking out for their team around them. Health and blessings to you, to your business, and to our community. Let's get through this.

First of all, keep going.

Second, as a society, we have learned in the last couple of months that having a digital footprint is no longer optional. To survive this landscape, we all need to be nimble, creative, and online. We're specifically speaking to small and medium-sized businesses that have mostly been able to dodge this is in our previous life. That is life before COVID-19. Blegh.

So here's the deal. That digital footprint requires two things:
1. Hustle.
2. Strategy.

Strategy is the only existing thing immune to this virus. No-one can reach the local economies like local businesses. And our broader economic recovery needs local economies to spark those embers. Therein lies the reason for smart digital strategy locally right now.
