Something new is always an exciting prospect. It can be anything that changes the face of daily life and brings it into a new pattern that makes us feel better. Drudgery can take over our thinking and then our actions. Sticking too close to one routine and never having a change is an obvious sign we are heading for drudgery. If renewal is to come there must be change - even if it is to walk a short distance, talk to someone out of the ordinary, and do something for someone. These things sound simplistic but if they turn our thinking to more creativity or more relaxation, it is worth doing. ~ I felt that I was leaving all that I had but I did not cry. ~

The BEER BOTTLE CAR promoted the Billings (Montana) Brewing Company 25 years before the existence of the first Oscar Mayer Wienermobile. The brewery, which opened in 1900, mounted the metal bottle atop a Maytag chain-drive automobile. The bottle contained an icebox with large quantities of beer. The cap at the front and the lantern at the rear attracted my eye. If using a PC, click image to enlarge/clarify.

Billings photographer Arthur Salsbury briefly worked for the brewery in about 1910. The photo dates from that year or a bit later. Commentary and digital restoration of photo by Gary Coffrin.

LEE CALDWELL, 1914, on Flying Devil at the Miles City Round-Up. Caldwell, a 19 year old lad from Oregon, was Montana State Rodeo Champion that year. In 1920, Caldwell rode in the Round-Up with a broken arm, fortifying his reputation as one of the all-time great bronc riders.

Flying Devil was pointed toward the lower left corner of the image at the start of his twisting leap! Caldwell reported that Flying Devil was the only bronc he rode that could jump as far backward as it could forward.

Photographer M.B. โ€œDocโ€ Marcell briefly operated a studio in Miles City, and his 1914 photo ranks among the greats in early sports photography. Text and digital restoration by Gary Coffrin of a poor-quality eBay scan.

Flowers keep us close to the earth and show us what repetition can do. When we are good planters and caretakers we see results - not just once but many times in many ways. We see the garden in our minds before we plant, and we see its needs and what we can do to make it better. But the garden in the mind stretches farther than just flowers and vegetables. It needs the same careful cultivation - never letting the w**d of illness or strife or discord take root. This garden blooms year round and we should refuse to let it become a w**d patch. ~ It is a day of beauty and bright sunshine. I rejoice that we can all meet here as friends, eat our bread and meat in communion, smoke the council pipe and the pipe of peace. ~

We are the designers, the engineers, the builders of our lives. But we are notorious for not staying with any one of these things to complete it because we are afraid something is developing in another area that we don't know about. Stick to it. Study it out and get so involved that nothing else can compete in importance. See each detail, measure every idea, refine and improve until you know it like the back of your hand. Be steady and consistent and never count yourself so important that you cannot stand corrected. Albert Einstein put it this way: If A equals success, then the formula is A equals X plus Y and Z, with X being work, Y being play, and Z keeping your mouth shut. ~ For him [the old Indian] to sit upon the ground is to be able to think more deeply and to feel more keenly; he can see more clearly into the mysteries of life. ~

Two qualities so well liked in people are brightness and warmth, both parts of the sun. Sir David Brewster was a Scottish physicist of the eighteenth century. His study of the material world and its phenomena called the sun glorious, "the center and soul of our system, the lamp that lights it, the fire that heats it, the magnet that guides and controls it, the fountain of color which gives it azure to the sky, its verdure to the fields, its rainbow-hues to the gay world of flowers, and the purple light of love to the marble cheek of youth and beauty." What more beautiful qualities for any human being to possess than to have a soul at the center of its system, to light the appearance, to warm the feelings, to guide and control it through its colorful moods, and to let it rise as high as the azure skies and as wide as the gay world of flowers. But better yet, to be most beautiful with the purple light of love. What more to be given than the same qualities of the sun - by one Creator. To live we need more than light, we need warmth. We need more than strength, we need grace. And more than all these we need love. There can be no greater joy than to see our respect for each other - the warmth and grace and love that binds together people in mutual concern. Only when we can lay aside our personal feelings, our self-concern and worry of our own gain, can we join in true communion and fellowship with others. And to feel a sense of belonging is necessary to humankind. It is the nature, not only to be liked and wanted, but to like and want others. And in this relationship find not just warmth but light, not only grace but strength, and in all of these find love. "Walk in the light and thou shalt see thy path, though thorny, bright; for God, by grace, shall dwell in thee, and God himself is light" - Barton.

Walk with me to the edge of the woods and hear the birds. They haven't all gone south, some stay the winter. The cardinal will later perch in the evergreens and make snow seem whiter - but now he sings in the bottom land that is protected from the wind. See the last of summer's flowers, the sunflower that is a great deal bigger than the palm of your hand. And watch the lone jet draw lines from one horizon almost to the other before the wind scatters his lines. Even when the season seems to be taking away all that the land has produced - remember the potential is still there, and so is yours. ~ We gave you our hearts. You now have them. ~
