Houston residents packed City Hall this week to make their voices heard on some of the city’s biggest challenges.

From concerns over proposed trash collection fees and rising living costs to flooding, drainage improvements, school safety, and funding for Houston Media Source, community members urged city leaders to take action on issues impacting everyday Houstonians.

Council members discussed possible exemptions for low-income families, seniors, and veterans, addressed infrastructure concerns in flood-prone neighborhoods, and acknowledged calls for safer pedestrian crossings near local schools. The meeting also included unanimous approval to rename a section of former Cesar Chavez Boulevard in honor of Master Sergeant Joe Chaco Ramirez, a decorated war hero and respected East End community leader.

The message throughout the meeting was clear: residents want investment, accountability, and solutions that put Houston communities first.

U.S. Rep. Christian Menefee defeated U.S. Rep. Al Green in Tuesday’s Democratic primary runoff for Texas’ 18th Congressional District, earning more than 70% of nearly 24,000 early votes cast in Harris County. The race marked a rare matchup between two sitting members of Congress after Texas lawmakers redrew district maps, placing both Democrats in the newly configured district that includes parts of Harris, Fort Bend and Brazoria counties. Menefee, who won a January special election for the seat following the death of former Rep. Sylvester Turner, will now face Republican nominee Ronald Whitfield in the November general election. ✨
