He sat easily on the ground and leaned his back against the rough bark of an oak and spoke solemnly of a problem relatively new to Cherokees. "Time was when ka in gv na w that doctors call depression was not in our camp. We had our lands and families, but it has changed. Old ones cry to leave land and trees, children wave little hands. Hardship not new, reason new. A scar is depression in skin. A hurt is depression in soul. Medicine cure cuts, but only Spirit sure hurt. Speak to it in your prayer and tell it go. Refuse it a place and always say thank you. Sing some, too. Deep in soul, sing, and it iron out depression." ~ I am afraid that the white men are not speaking straight.... ~

Corralled for the Noon Change, circa 1904. The rare L.A. Huffman vista showed the cavvy, working horses for the roundup, ready for the cowhands to obtain fresh mounts. The bedroll wagon formed part of the rope corral; the chuckwagon was closer to the camera. Distant cottonwood trees were along the Tongue River, south of Miles City in Eastern Montana.

Huffman was likely 300+ yards from the cavvy. If Huffman had been closer, the horses would have looked larger relative to the size of the distant trees. The original vista was hugely expansive. I cropped away 90.5% of the view on the 6.5x8.5 inch glass plate negative. The plate had 41 times the surface area of 35mm film. So, even after cutting out 90.5% of the view, I was still left with an image area 3.9 times larger than 35mm film. Click image to better see detail if using a PC. MONTANA, August 1939. The temperature was likely near 100. The driver carried a water bag for refilling the radiator. Marion Post Wolcott was a privileged East Coast woman who went to work for the Farm Security Administration during the Great Depression. Montana had more miles of roads per person than any state in the union. The sign alerted drivers that they could take the road to Birney in Eastern Montana to access a telephone.

Fellow FSA photographer Arthur Rothstein wrote: "The trouble with working out here is that you have to travel so far to get anywhere." I grew up in Miles City, 130 miles NE of Birney. Miles City, then 9,600 residents, was the 10th largest city in the state. The nearest larger town was Billings, 145 miles west. Click image to enlarge. First things and first times....the newness of the present moment holds such a breath of youth, such a challenge, there are moments in everyone's life they wish they could relive. Just to recall those times when the newness, the memory of first things were beautiful and exciting. But life never stands still. It moves forward or it decays. It cannot hold on to the past in any way. If the newness of first things has not grown into finer and more beautiful moments, then it cannot go on. Everyone can recall something so dear that it becomes new again just by thinking about it. Courage, love, joy, contentment, all these can call to mind the special moments that were beginnings of new eras, new times in living. The scales of life tip this way and that to make those times full of meaning and sometimes vividly painful. And then sometimes it takes a season to mend the heart and spirit. When they are ready, the experience of new times and new beginnings and first things will bloom once more and the youthful challenge again enchants.

"I don't think that anybody anywhere can talk about the future of their people or of an organization without talking about education. Whoever controls the education of our children controls our future, the future of the Cherokee people and of the Cherokee Nation." --Wilma P. Mankiller, CHEROKEE-- The world has changed in the last 50 years. It will change even more in the next 50 years, and it will change even faster. We must educate ourselves to ensure our future generations will maintain the language and the culture of our people. We need to be concerned about our land because when our land goes away, so will our people. We need to be concerned about leadership, our families and about alcoholism. We need to be concerned about what's going on around the world. We can only do this by being educated. Then we can control our future. Great Spirit, please guide our children; let me know how I can help.

"I started drinking more seriously, seeking refuge, seeking death actually, from a world that was feeling more and more unnatural to me. Following a painful accident related to drinking, I finally realized that I must decide whether I want to follow my grandparents or truly take up this life. Circumstances that followed led me to choose life." --Barney Bush, SHAWNEEโ€“ My life is run by choices and decisions. Every choice I make today will carry with it the consequences of that choice. Every decision I make today will carry with it the consequences of that decision. The question I will ask myself today is, "Do I want to be happy or do I want to be right?" Which ever one I choose will have a lot to do with the consequences I will experience today. If today was the last day of my life, what choices and what decisions would I make? Oh Great Spirit, guide my path today and help me see the value of choosing the Red Road.
